Toyota Prepares A Hybrid Coupé SUV With Up To 223 Hp And An Electric Range Of 86 Km, Developed Under Project 913D. Model Will Use The TNGA-C Platform And Will Be Produced In Sorocaba, With Expected Launch In 2028.

Toyota is preparing a third national utility vehicle with a coupé body, internally developed under the Project 913D, and expected to debut around 2028.

The model will use the TNGA-C architecture, the same platform as the Corolla and Corolla Cross, and should debut with two hybrid solutions, including a plug-in flex option inspired by the Prius setup, with a combined output of up to 223 hp and the ability to travel up to 86 km solely in electric mode, according to parameters already seen abroad.

The new model adds to the redesign of the brand’s industrial schedule in the country after the delay of the Yaris Cross, which was rescheduled due to the damage caused by the storm that hit the Porto Feliz engine factory.

TNGA-C Platform And Dimensions Of The Coupé SUV

The coupé SUV will arise from the TNGA-C platform, a strategy that facilitates component sharing with current products and reduces development costs.

To maintain interior space, the wheelbase will be 2.70 m, identical to that of the sedan and the SUV already in line.

The length is expected to be around 4.60 m, also in the range of the Corolla.

The idea is to occupy a step above the Corolla Cross in design appeal and content, without replacing it.

In market terms, the mission is to strengthen the range with a body style of greater commercial appeal, especially targeting rivals with a “fastback” silhouette.

Two Hybrid Versions: Flex And Plug-In Flex

The mechanical offering will be fully electrified.

In the access versions, Toyota will maintain the already known flex hybrid system in Brazil, which combines a combustion engine 1.8 adapted for ethanol and gasoline with an electric motor, with a combined power around 122 hp.

The tuning will focus on efficiency, with predominant operation of the electric motor in urban use and a priority for reduced consumption.

The technical highlight will be the plug-in flex hybrid (PHEV) aimed at the top trims.

Engineering is working on adapting the setup seen in the new Prius, which, in its international configuration, combines a 2.0 gasoline engine with 152 hp and 19.4 m·kgf with an electric motor of 163 hp and 21.2 m·kgf, resulting in 223 hp of combined power.

In the Prius, the lithium-ion battery pack has 13.6 kWh and enables about 86 km of electric range in the WLTP cycle.

For Brazil, the idea is to adapt the system for the use of ethanol, which tends to favor both performance and emissions in the local context.

Fine details regarding power and range of the future SUV will depend on final calibration and the effective size of the battery pack chosen for the national version.

Project 913D And Launch Schedule

Insider information points to the debut in 2028, a window chosen to avoid overlaps with the Yaris Cross and the new monocoque pickup.

Development continues alongside efforts to stabilize industrial operations after the weather event in September, when strong winds and heavy rains significantly damaged the Porto Feliz facility, responsible for engines.

As a result, the launch of the Yaris Cross was rescheduled and the complexes in Sorocaba and Indaiatuba outlined a plan for a gradual return to production using imported engines until the normalization of the manufacturing park.

Production Concentrated In Sorocaba

The manufacturing of the coupé SUV is scheduled for Sorocaba (SP), a hub that is receiving investments and expansion to accommodate new models from the TNGA-C family.

The Corolla produced in Indaiatuba (SP) has a planned transfer to Sorocaba as part of the process of closing the sedan plant, as announced by the company and currently in transition.

Meanwhile, following the latest industrial plan, both vehicle factories in the state are working on recovery and cadence adjustments, initially focusing on the production of the hybrid Corolla and Corolla Cross, as engine supply becomes viable until Porto Feliz fully recovers.

Features And Differentiators Of The New SUV

Although the project is still under development, the content strategy should reflect the model’s ambition.

A digital instrument cluster, next-generation multimedia center, a comprehensive package of driving assistance, and a finish aligned with the positioning above the Corolla Cross are expected.

The descending roofline and more pronounced rear will compose the coupé visual, a feature used to differentiate the new model within the line and bring it closer to competitors betting on the fastback silhouette.

Yaris Cross Delayed And Impact On The Line

The schedule for the Yaris Cross, repositioned for the 2026 line, was affected by the storm’s impact on Porto Feliz.

Toyota announced emergency vacations and temporary layoffs for teams, with plans for a partial return of the production lines in Sorocaba and Indaiatuba and the use of imported components while the diagnosis and recovery of the engine plant are concluded.

This rearrangement preserves the launch of the coupé SUV for a later phase, reducing the risk of cannibalization and balancing launches in a scenario of restricted supply.

Monocoque Pickup Arrives Before The Coupé SUV

Among the new releases, the brand is preparing a monocoque pickup positioned below the Hilux, with a size similar to that of the Fiat Toro and Chevrolet Montana.

The trend is to adopt the same TNGA platform as the current utilities, prioritizing hybrid versions and efficiency solutions.

The launch is expected in 2027, creating a strategic interval until the arrival of the coupé SUV from Project 913D.

The product will serve as an intermediate option in the portfolio, targeting urban and mixed users, with a focus on consumption, comfort, and payload compatible with the unibody proposal.

What Has Not Been Confirmed By Toyota Yet

Some points remain under wraps or await internal definition.

Commercial name, trim levels, official data on battery capacity and electric range for the national PHEV, as well as exact timelines for the start of production and arrival in stores, will only be disclosed when engineering concludes calibration for ethanol and the industrial planning confirms supply chains.

Until then, the technical references of the Prius serve as a benchmark to understand the performance and efficiency ambitions of the coupé SUV, without meaning literal reproduction of the setup.

With the strengthening of hybrids and the expansion of Sorocaba, the new coupé SUV could become the most technologically advanced model of Toyota produced in the country.

What other features do you consider essential for it to compete with Chinese and national rivals?
