Toyota Reveals Its Most Anticipated Off-Road SUV, the ‘Mini Hilux’. A Robust and Innovative Model That Promises to Sell Like Hotcakes
Toyota is strategically moving in the market. With the popularity of the Hilux growing and becoming increasingly sophisticated, the Japanese brand decided to launch the Hilux Champ, a more accessible version aimed at commercial use. Now, anticipation rises for a new SUV derived from this platform, a model that promises to be a “Mini Hilux” with off-road appeal.
This new model, which may be called Land Cruiser FJ, is expected to reach international markets by the end of this year. Using the same platform as the Hilux Champ, it will be positioned as a low-cost option within Toyota’s SUV lineup. In Brazil, the name Land Cruiser may not have as much appeal, but globally it is one of the brand’s most iconic models. Here, it became better known as Bandeirante, a success in past decades.
New Toyota SUV Nicknamed “Mini Hilux” Is Positioned Between the Corolla Cross and the RAV4
Historically, the Land Cruiser evolved from a robust utility vehicle to a sophisticated one, just like the Hilux. Therefore, Toyota’s new SUV presents itself as a spiritual successor to the Bandeirante, bringing back the off-road essence. However, with a modern approach aimed at the current market, where the demand for SUVs with adventurous features is high.

In terms of competition, Toyota’s new SUV, nicknamed “Mini Hilux,” will be a direct response to the Suzuki Jimny. However, this model will be larger, positioned between the Corolla Cross and the RAV4 in terms of size. Unlike the current trend, Toyota will opt for a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine with 166 hp, the same used in the Hilux Champ, at least in its version in Japan.
However, it is possible that in other markets, such as Europe, the model may be electrified to meet local demands.
New Compact and Affordable Off-Road SUV Inspired by the Mini Hilux Has an Uncertain Future in Brazil
In Brazil, the arrival of the new FJ Cruiser, or accessible SW4, is still uncertain. Toyota has a conservative approach, preferring to launch vehicles with a guarantee of success. However, competition from Chinese SUVs, such as the GWM Tank 300 and the BYD Bao Leopard 05, may pressure the manufacturer to bring this novelty to the country.
Moreover, rumors indicate that the model may have 2.4 and 2.8-liter diesel engines for the Southeast Asian market. However, the expectation is that Toyota will maintain its tradition of innovation, offering a robust SUV ready for off-road, but with a touch of modernity. Thus, the Japanese manufacturer continues to explore new opportunities, remaining competitive in the global SUV market.
As we await more details about the official launch, anticipation grows. Toyota has the potential to revolutionize the affordable SUV segment with its new “Mini Hilux,” bringing a vehicle that combines tradition and innovation to the market.
