Two children died after the collapse of a house in the Praia do Rosa Community, in Tauá, Ilha do Governador, North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, on the morning of this Thursday (25th). The victims were 11 and 4 years old and were found lifeless during the rescue operation.
Rescue mobilized firefighters and community residents
Shortly after the collapse, teams from the Military Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CBMERJ) were called to conduct the searches. Thus, military personnel worked on removing the rubble and attempting to locate possible victims.

According to the information released, the three-story building collapsed around 7:30 a.m., leaving the floors completely flattened after the structure’s collapse.
Additionally, a woman and a child were rescued alive, without apparent injuries. Meanwhile, the searches continued focused on locating the two girls who were missing.
Community residents also participated in the operation. In this way, a human chain was organized to assist in removing materials such as bricks, tiles, and pieces of plaster.
During the work, the firefighters requested silence from the residents. The goal was to identify possible signs of life among the rubble.
Children were at home before going to school when the collapse occurred
According to neighbors’ reports, at the time of the accident, the girls’ parents had already left for work. Meanwhile, the children were getting ready to go to school.
Additionally, residents reported that the noise of the structure’s fall drew attention in the region.
The store operator Edson Moreira Miranda Júnior stated that he initially thought the sound was from construction work.
“When I went to open the door, everything was already closed, I couldn’t even leave the house,” he said. Later, according to him, he managed to leave the building after the firefighters arrived.
Civil Defense would evaluate nearby buildings after collapse in Ilha do Governador
After the accident, Civil Defense reported that it would conduct an evaluation of neighboring buildings to check for the risk of new structural problems.
Additionally, monitoring of the area continued to ensure the safety of residents and teams involved in responding to the incident.
