Eletronuclear reported that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it decided to reduce activities to the minimum necessary, maintaining only what is essential for work at the unit. The forecast is that the Angra 2 shutdown will last 22 days.

Eletronuclear explained in a statement that it is leveraging the experience of nuclear power plants in other countries that are also undergoing refueling and maintenance shutdowns during this period.

According to the state company, of the 4,500 activities necessary for a typical shutdown at the power plant, only 1,100 actions will be carried out, and the major challenge will be to perform about 20% of typical shutdown activities with 15% of the personnel normally available.

João Carlos da Cunha Bastos, Director of Operations and Marketing at Eletronuclear, stated that this will be an unprecedented, quite difficult, and labor-intensive shutdown, but keeping generation available is essential for Brazil during this serious moment the country is experiencing and also to ensure the economic balance of the company.

According to the executive, employees working at the Angra 1 Nuclear Power Plant will join those at Angra 2 to carry out the planned activities, and to reduce the risks of contamination, several sanitary measures have been planned.

All, including contractors, are undergoing rapid testing for COVID-19; the workforce has been divided into two groups; hygiene mats have already been installed at the access points and inside the Angra 2 Nuclear Power Plant; daily temperature measurements of workers will be carried out; in addition to medical assistance stations at the unit and in the contractors’ lodging area.
