US$ 1.3 billion project will have 9.8 kilometers in length, will integrate a corridor with tunnels, bridges, and viaducts, and promises to reduce the journey between Medellín and Urabá from seven hours to four and a half hours
The Túnel del Toyo in Colombia is scheduled to open in 2027 and is expected to become the largest road tunnel in the Americas, with a length of 9.8 kilometers. The project will connect the Medellín region to the Gulf of Urabá in the Colombian Caribbean, reducing a journey of about seven hours to four and a half hours.
Túnel del Toyo will surpass current Colombian record
The project, officially called Túnel Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri, will be larger than the Túnel de La Línea, also located in Colombia, which is 8.65 kilometers long and currently holds the title of the largest road tunnel in the Americas.
The structure is part of a 39.5-kilometer road corridor. In addition to the main tunnel, the megaproject includes 18 other tunnels, more than 30 bridges and viaducts, and various highway sections.

China is no longer cheaper because of labor, but because it has entire cities built around a single product for 40 years, and this is something that Vietnam, India, and Mexico will never be able to replicate no matter how much they try.
Tunnel should shorten the journey between Medellín and Urabá
Currently, the journey between Medellín and Urabá, over a distance of about 300 kilometers, passes through mountainous sections of the Andes, with winding roads.
With the new connection, the expectation is to create a more efficient route between the interior of Colombia and the Caribbean coast.
The tunnel crosses mountains at an approximate depth of 900 meters, one of the main technical challenges of the project.

Project entered the final phase before operation
The excavation and the main civil works were completed in February 2026, about ten years after the start of the project.
The current stage involves the installation of electromechanical systems, as well as operational and safety tests.
According to the National Institute of Roads of Colombia, the control system of the Túnel del Toyo will have real-time monitoring, intelligent lighting, automated ventilation, and safety features for operation.
Investment reaches US$ 1.3 billion
The total investment in the road corridor is estimated at about US$ 1.3 billion, equivalent to R$ 6.6 billion. The official deadline foresees completion of the works and entry into operation in the second half of 2027.
The governor of Antioquia, Andrés Julián Rendón Cardona, told Forbes that the project could also increase Urabá’s attractiveness for initiatives related to the aerospace sector.
According to him, there was contact with Elon Musk and representatives of the United States government to discuss possible future investments.
