Brazilian Drivers In Italy Can Now Exchange Their Driver’s Licenses Without Having To Take Tests! The New Rule, Already Approved By The Senate, Eliminates Bureaucracy And Makes Life Easier For Those Driving Abroad. Italians In Brazil Will Also Benefit! See How To Request The Conversion And Take Advantage Of This Change That Came To Transform Mobility Between Countries!

A new agreement between Brazil and Italy promises to make life easier for drivers who travel between the two countries.

The Federal Senate approved Legislative Decree Project (PDL) No. 683/2024, which ratifies the mutual recognition of driving licenses.

The measure replaces the previous treaty, which was in effect between 2018 and 2023, and is now awaiting promulgation to take effect.

What Changes With The New Agreement

With the new regulation, Brazilian residents in Italy for less than six years can request the conversion of their driver’s licenses without having to take theoretical and practical tests.

Currently, it is estimated that more than 159,000 Brazilians live in the European country, making this change significant.

Similarly, Italians living in Brazil – a contingent of approximately 800,000 people – will also be able to convert their licenses without extra bureaucracy.

Rules For Converting The Driver’s License

For the conversion to be carried out without the need for exams, some rules must be followed:

  • The driver’s license must be permanent and within the validity period.
  • The applicant must have resided in the country for less than six years at the time of the conversion request.
  • The conversion is only valid for categories A and B, intended for motorcycles and passenger vehicles.
  • Drivers of categories C, D, and E will still need to undergo specific courses and exams.
  • The authorities may require medical examinations to verify the driver’s physical and psychological fitness.
  • The agreement only applies to licenses obtained before residency in the foreign country.
  • Documents obtained by replacement of driver’s licenses issued in third countries cannot be converted.

How To Request The Conversion Of The Driver’s License

For Brazilians living in Italy, the request must be made at the Motorizzazione Civile, the agency responsible for traffic in the country.

Italians residing in Brazil should send their request to the Traffic Department (Detran) of the state where they reside.

The conversion process follows local regulations and may require documents such as a passport, proof of residence, and a medical certificate.

Benefits Of The Recognition Of The Driver’s License Between Brazil And Italy

The ratification of this agreement brings numerous benefits to citizens of both countries, eliminating additional costs and reducing bureaucracy.

Moreover, it prevents Brazilians and Italians from having to undergo training and retesting to drive in their respective countries of residence.

This ease encourages mobility, benefiting students, workers, and families who travel between the nations.

The measure also strengthens the diplomatic ties between Brazil and Italy, demonstrating joint efforts to facilitate the lives of their citizens.

Now that the Senate has approved the project, the expectation is that promulgation will occur soon, allowing drivers to enjoy this right as soon as possible.

And you, what do you think of this news? Should the conversion of the driver’s license be expanded to more categories? Leave your opinion in the comments!
