Error In Group Message On Signal Exposed Details Of Military Attack In Yemen. Democrats Call For Investigation And National Security Becomes Target Of Criticism.
A leak in the Signal app caused one of the biggest security controversies for the U.S. government this year. Senior officials linked to former President Donald Trump used a group on the platform to discuss details of an attack against Houthi rebels in Yemen — and, by mistake, added a journalist to the secret group.
According to the magazine The Atlantic, editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg was mistakenly included in the conversation and gained access to confidential information about the schedule and targets of the bombing. The journalist saw everything about two hours before the attack occurred, which put the Department of Defense on alert.
What Is Signal And Why Was It Used?
Signal is a messaging app known for its end-to-end encryption, meaning that only the sender and receiver can see the content. However, the platform’s security also depends on human caution — which did not happen in this case.

A rare earths mine in Goiás, sold to the US for US$ 2.8 billion, never belonged to Brazil, but has now become a central piece in the global dispute between mineral sovereignty, geopolitical influence, strategic industry, and the global race for critical minerals dominated by China.
A report published by Época Negócios on March 25 shows that, despite its reputation for safety, Signal may not be the best choice for high-level national security discussions, especially when used without proper oversight.
Immediate Reactions And Accusations Of Irresponsibility
After the revelation, the case quickly spread through the international press. The newspaper The Guardian highlighted that members of the Democratic Party, such as Senator Chuck Schumer, labeled the incident as “one of the worst military intelligence leaks in recent history.” They called for an urgent investigation into the use of unofficial apps for such sensitive topics.
On the other hand, Donald Trump tried to downplay the case, calling the incident a “small technical issue,” as reported by the New York Post. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz took responsibility for the error and stated he was “working to strengthen communication protocols.”
