Sustainable Action of Line 4-Yellow Reinforces Commitment to Operational Efficiency and Environmental Practices in the Rail Sector

A ViaQuatro, operator of the Line 4-Yellow of the São Paulo Metro, launched in July 2025 the project “Clean Cycle – Intelligent Reuse of Oil”.
The proposal aims to collect, filter, and reuse lubricating oil used in auxiliary vehicles.
According to the company, the measure generated savings of over R$ 64 thousand in 2024 alone, with projections of R$ 70 thousand by the end of this year.
By the end of the concession in 2036, savings could exceed R$ 1.6 million.

The reuse occurs in the three trucks, one van, and two cars that make up the auxiliary fleet.
During each annual preventive maintenance, the company used to change more than 2,000 liters of hydraulic oil, with an average annual cost exceeding R$ 83 thousand.
In total, it is estimated that over 45,000 liters will be used throughout the concession.

Microfiltration System Ensures Safety and Technical Performance

To reduce environmental impacts and operational costs, ViaQuatro implemented a high-precision microfiltration and dialysis system.
This system removes up to 99.6% of solid impurities and water from the oil, allowing its reuse in non-critical uses.
The process occurs only after technical analyses by the predictive maintenance team, which monitors the quality and performance of the lubricant.

The recycled oil is used in equipment in the operation and maintenance areas, such as grinding trains, which correct tracks.
It is also used in the locomotive, responsible for maneuvers; and in the overhead line vehicles, which work on maintaining the catenaries.
This way, ViaQuatro reduces unnecessary disposals, avoids failures, and maintains operational safety.

Initiative Reinforces ESG Agenda and Conscious Use of Resources

According to Antonio Marcio Barros Silva, director of ViaQuatro, the project “reinforces the commitment to sustainable practices and reduction of environmental impact.”
He also emphasizes that Clean Cycle is a practical example of environmental responsibility in the rail sector.
For Romulo Maia, maintenance manager, “the action unites economy, sustainability, and efficiency in a single solution.”

In addition to the reuse of oil, the project contributes to the efficient use of natural resources such as water and energy.
It also reinforces the company’s ESG agenda.
The concessionaire demonstrates that it is possible to maintain technical efficiency while adopting low environmental impact solutions.
The result is real savings and commitment to the environment.

Concessionaire Expands Use of Renewable Energy in Its Lines

ViaQuatro, along with ViaMobilidade, also invests heavily in clean energy.
Since 2025, 100% of the electricity used in the lines operated by Motiva in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Bahia comes from renewable sources.
This was only possible after joining, at the end of 2024, three wind farms in the Otis Complex, in Piauí, in partnership with Neoenergia.

This supply contract feeds the Lines 4-Yellow, 5-Purple, 8-Diamond, and 9-Emerald.
It reinforces Motiva’s commitment to reducing emissions and carbon footprint.
Climate change and demands for sustainable solutions have made this transition not only strategic but urgent.
It also consolidates metro-rail transport as a clean and efficient alternative.

Line 4-Yellow Leads Innovation and Safety in Urban Transport

Line 4-Yellow of ViaQuatro also stands out for operating with an automated driverless system. Thus, it has become a pioneering model throughout Latin America.
Moreover, the technology allows for permanent monitoring, ensures precision in maneuvers, and consequently provides more safety for users.
The concession contract was signed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP); thus, it marked the first model of its kind in Brazil.

Since then, ViaQuatro has been demonstrating that innovation, sustainability, and efficient management, when integrated, can walk together with excellent results.
For example, the Clean Cycle reveals that small technical changes, if well planned, generate positive and lasting impacts over time.
In addition to reusing resources, the company invests in renewable sources and, thus, reinforces its environmental commitment and operational excellence.
