Advanced Technology Aims for Fuel Economy and Energy Efficiency.
In the relentless pursuit of efficiency and sustainability, VLI, a renowned company in logistics solutions encompassing railways, ports, and terminals, has made a significant technological leap with the Leader project. With a direct focus on maximizing energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions, this innovation has found its place in the Southeast and East corridors of the Centro-Atlântica Railway.
Detailing the Technological Advancement
In the second half of 2022, the project was initially established in the Northern Corridor, allowing 51 locomotives equipped with this driving assistance technology to cross the route between Porto Nacional (TO) and the port system of São Luíz (MA). Now, the technology extends to an additional 110 locomotives in the Southeast Corridor and another 29 in the East, culminating in 190 locomotives operating under this new dynamic.

A new study overturns the central idea we learned about planets and suggests that Earth is the exception rather than the rule; most rocky worlds in the galaxy may not have a core or mantle, just a single turbulent fluid extending to the center.

Scientists reanimated a 48,500-year-old virus in the laboratory that had been frozen in the Siberian permafrost since before the extinction of the Neanderthals, and it was still capable of infecting living organisms after tens of millennia dormant in the ice.
With the integration of this innovative software, once the locomotive reaches a speed beyond 8 km/h, the engineer has the freedom to engage semi-autonomous driving. Cesar Toniolo, the General Manager of Engineering, Development, and Operational Technology at VLI, emphasizes that the Leader project is a milestone in the company’s decarbonization journey. “The essence of this technology is to identify operational aspects that enhance driving more effectively, minimizing the use of fossil fuels,” he notes.
Future Projections and Benefits
The implementation of this technology brings with it an optimistic projection: saving up to 7% in fuel consumption in the East and Southeast Corridors and 3.5% in the Northern Corridor. With continuous improvements and targeted adjustments, VLI aspires to achieve these goals by 2024. “The program has been adapted to the specificities of our company’s railway. With each test conducted, optimizations are incorporated, seeking system excellence. Currently, the project is undergoing validation and adjustment stages to the operational reality of VLI,” details Toniolo.
This advancement by VLI signals a greener and more efficient future for the railway sector, reaffirming the company’s commitment to combining technological innovation with environmental responsibility.
