CJ-1000 Model Advances in Tests and Promises to Replace Foreign Engines of C919 Jet. With Performance Above Expectations, the Chinese Engine for the C919 Jet is Set to Equip Commercial Airplanes Starting in 2026. The Goal is to Conquer the Market and Reduce Dependency on Technologies from the US and Europe.
The race for technological independence in the aerospace sector has taken a new chapter. The Chinese engine for the C919 jet, known as the CJ-1000, is surprising experts and making a strategic leap in global aviation. Developed by the Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC), the engine has undergone a series of recent tests and has already shown performance above expectations — something many thought would take years to happen.
While the C919 still flies with LEAP engines, manufactured by a joint venture between the American General Electric (GE) and the French Safran, China is quickly moving closer to producing its own propulsion system. And this changes everything in the global aviation game.
Chinese Engine CJ-1000 Shows Strength and Challenges Western Dominance
The Chinese engine for the C919 jet is a high-bypass turbofan, meaning it uses modern technology that combines power, quietness, and fuel efficiency. It was designed to gradually replace the LEAP-1C engines — which are currently the only ones certified for the C919.

The most recent tests integrated the CJ-1000 into the Chinese military cargo plane Y-20. The idea was to evaluate the engine’s performance in a large aircraft before moving on to commercial flights. The results excited Chinese engineers: stability, power, and reliability exceeded initial projections.
According to industry sources, the engine is already ready to begin certification flights with the C919 in the coming months. The expectation is that the final version will be approved by 2026, marking a turning point for the Chinese aerospace industry.
C919 is Already a Reality — and it May Have a 100% Chinese Face
The Comac C919 is the commercial jet that China has introduced to compete with the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320. With a capacity of 158 to 174 passengers, it first flew in 2017, but it was only in May 2024 that it made its first commercial flight, operated by China Eastern Airlines.
The aircraft is modern, designed for domestic and regional travel, and already has more than 1,000 orders, primarily from Chinese companies. But until now, it has only taken off with parts and systems from the West — and this bothers Beijing.
With the Chinese engine CJ-1000 ready to replace the LEAP engines, the plan is to make the C919 entirely domestic. It is China’s strategy to reduce geopolitical risks and gain autonomy in one of the most sensitive areas of the global economy: aviation.
Why Does This Matter to the World?
Having a functional Chinese engine for the C919 jet completely changes the power balance in the sector. Today, GE, Safran, Rolls-Royce, and Pratt & Whitney dominate the commercial engine supply. With the CJ-1000, China is stepping into this game — and promises more competitive prices and faster deliveries for its domestic customers.
The project paves the way for new models of 100% Chinese aircraft in the future. The logic is clear: if you control the engine, you control the airplane. And if you control the airplane, you control the market.
Experts also point out that the CJ-1000 is just the beginning. There are already rumors about an even more advanced model — the CJ-2000, which could equip long-range aircraft, such as the CR929, a Sino-Russian project that is also under development.
