The Best-Selling Hybrid Cars are gaining increasing popularity in the Brazilian automotive market, becoming one of the main bets from manufacturers to expand the Electrified Vehicles segment in the country. Combining the advantages of combustion-powered cars with the benefits of electric models, hybrids offer a more affordable option for those looking to reduce environmental impact and save on fuel.

The biggest advantage is that, for the most part, these vehicles do not require charging at charging stations — an infrastructure still limited in Brazil — yet still ensure fuel savings and a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.

According to data released by the National Federation of Motor Vehicle Distribution (Fenabrave), sales of Best-Selling Hybrid Cars in Brazil increased by approximately 67% in the first seven months of this year. In absolute numbers, there were 34,890 registrations between January and July of last year, while this year, the number has jumped to 58,419 units, demonstrating the significant growth of this market.

The Different Types of Hybrid Vehicles in Brazil

Before exploring the most affordable models available in the Brazilian market, it’s worth highlighting the three main types of hybrid vehicles:

  • Light Hybrid (MHEV): this type of car features a battery that assists the combustion engine during starts and accelerations. Additionally, the system can supply the electrical demand for items such as air conditioning, resulting in lower fuel consumption. The average consumption of these vehicles in Brazil is approximately 13 km/l.
  • PHEV (HEV): vehicles with this system have larger batteries and utilize the electric motor to drive the wheels. This ensures even lower fuel consumption, with some models reaching an average of up to 20 km/l.
  • Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV): plug-in hybrids have larger batteries that allow operation in 100% electric mode for distances between 30 and 120 km. To recharge, it is necessary to connect the vehicle to an external power source, such as a charging station. When operating in hybrid mode, these cars can register consumption exceeding 40 km/l.
