The Scenario Of Decline In Covid-19 Cases Was Pointed Out By The Indicators Of The Special Committee For Monitoring And Facing The Pandemic Of Macaé.
The municipality of Macaé, known as the Oil Capital, in Rio de Janeiro, has zero occupancy of patients in Covid-19 inpatient and ICU beds, and the positivity rate of new cases has been reduced by half. Thus, Mayor Welberth Rezende signed a decree that lifts the mask mandate in open and closed environments. The announcement was made on the manager’s social media.
The decision was made in light of the decline in the main pandemic indicators in Macaé, analyzed over the past 15 days by the Special Committee for Monitoring And Facing The Covid-19 Pandemic. Thus, the flexibilization of sanitary protocols for combating the disease is expanded. The vaccinated population in Macaé reached 68%, considering the two doses and single dose of the vaccine.
In the decree signed by Rezende, however, there is a recommendation for the use of facial protection on public transport, schools, banks, healthcare facilities, bus stations, airports, and ports; and for immunosuppressed individuals, those with respiratory illness symptoms, pregnant women, and the elderly.

Mayor of Macaé Asks for Community Collaboration
The Mayor of Macaé, Welberth Rezende, asked the population to continue cooperating with safety regulations and expressed gratitude. “Macaé had an average of half the deaths that occurred in the rest of the state. It was certainly due to this partnership with the University (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), the scientific committee, and the population that joined and directly participated in the whole campaign,” highlighted the manager.
To date, the state of Rio de Janeiro has recorded 72,591 deaths from Covid-19 and about 2,700 cases currently. According to the epidemiological bulletin from the municipality of Macaé, the Oil Capital has recorded 823 deaths from the disease.
Why Is Macaé The National Oil City?
In the early 1970s, Macaé entered a new economic phase with the discovery of oil in the Campos Basin, Brazil’s continental shelf. Thus, there was a significant boost to the local economy, with Petrobras showing interest in establishing operations in the municipality.
As a result, Macaé contributed to Brazil becoming one of the most advanced countries in deep-water prospecting for oil extraction, making the municipality known as the Oil Capital.
It is in Macaé that several Petrobras facilities and companies from the offshore sector are located. This basin accounts for 80% of Brazil’s crude oil and 47% of the country’s natural gas production.
