Sophie Lloyd Fooled The British Magic Elite In 1991, But Was Expelled On The Same Day Women Were Accepted
In a male-dominated environment, Sophie Lloyd Did The Impossible: disguised as a man, she entered the Magic Circle, the traditional British society of magicians, at a time when women were banned from being part of the organization, according to the website Terra.
With the help of her friend and magician Jenny Winstanley, Sophie became “Raymond Lloyd”, a fictional 18-year-old magician. A wig, suit, gloves, and a raspy voice disguised her true identity. In March 1991, after months of preparation, she delivered a flawless performance in front of 200 people — and was accepted as a member.
The Revelation, The Expulsion And The Recognition
Months later, when the Magic Circle announced that women could finally become members, Sophie revealed the truth. Instead of recognition, she was expelled in the same meeting where other women were officially admitted.

Now, more than three decades later, the Magic Circle has corrected this historical mistake. On April 24, Sophie officially received her membership certificate. The event also honored Jenny Winstanley, who passed away in 2004 and was the mastermind behind the feat.
“This is for Jenny, really. I think she would have loved this,” Sophie said, emotionally.
