Rare phenomenon on the Parana coast surprises residents and raises alert about little noticed tremors in the country, even with frequent records throughout the year
In the early hours of this Sunday (12), an unusual phenomenon caught attention on the coast of Paraná. An earthquake of magnitude 2.4 on the Richter Scale was recorded in the region between Ilha do Mel and the city of Paranaguá, surprising specialists and reinforcing a little-known fact: Brazil also has seismic activity, albeit of low intensity.
The information was released by “Tribuna”, based on official data from the USP Seismology Center, which confirmed the record of the seismic tremor that occurred during the early morning. Although it did not cause damage or widespread panic, the event became the most intense recorded in the state of Paraná in 2026, which naturally sparked curiosity and attention.

Where the earthquake occurred and what the technical data says about the seismic tremor
According to the technical data released, the epicenter of the tremor was identified in the Bay of Paranaguá, located between the city of Paranaguá and Ilha do Mel — one of the most well-known and preserved tourist destinations in the state. Furthermore, specialists classified the event as a shallow earthquake, with an estimated depth between 0 and 10 kilometers below the Earth’s surface.

While Brazilian stadiums take weeks to change the turf, the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid stores six trays of 1,500 tons in less than five hours and transforms the field into a stage, increasing revenue and event capacity.
This type of characteristic is important because, in general, shallow tremors tend to be more perceptible. However, in this specific case, the low magnitude meant that most of the population did not even notice the phenomenon, which is quite common in events of this scale.
Additionally, it is essential to highlight that seismic tremors of magnitude 2.4 are considered low intensity. That is, they rarely cause structural damage or risks to the population. Still, they serve as a scientific alert and help in the continuous monitoring of the geological activity of the country.
Why earthquakes occur in Brazil even far from large tectonic plates
Although many people associate earthquakes with countries located in zones of great tectonic instability, such as Japan or Chile, the Brazilian reality also includes small tremors. This occurs because the Earth’s crust is in constant movement, accumulating and releasing energy over time.
Consequently, even in regions considered stable, such as Brazilian territory, it is possible to record occasional seismic tremors. These events result from natural pressures that gradually adjust, releasing energy in a localized manner.
In the case of Paraná, for example, the last record had occurred in the city of Castro on February 19, with a magnitude of 1.7. Since then, the state has already recorded seven seismic tremors throughout 2026, with the one recorded between Paranaguá and Ilha do Mel being the most intense so far.
Therefore, although these phenomena are discreet and, most of the time, imperceptible, they are part of the natural dynamics of the planet and continue to be monitored by scientific institutions.
