The Iconic Bike from the Anime Akira Got a Functional Electric Replica Made by Bel & Bel. Find Out How Much It Costs, How It Works, and Why It Became a Collector’s Item.

In 1988, the Japanese animated film Akira marked generations and helped to consolidate cyberpunk culture. Among all the elements of the work, no object became as iconic as the red motorcycle ridden by Shotaro Kaneda. Now, more than three decades later, fans’ dreams have come true: the bike got a functional replica, electric and with a design true to the original.

Created by the Spanish studio Bel & Bel, which specializes in transforming pop culture classics into real vehicles, the replica of the Kaneda Bike combines a futuristic look with updated technology to ride on the streets.

Futuristic Design True to the Original

The recreated bike immediately draws attention with its style. The low and enveloping fairing, wide wheels, integrated handlebars, and minimalist look have been maintained exactly as in the anime.

The creators’ idea was to build not just a conceptual bike, but a functional model capable of being ridden like any high-performance motorcycle.

Additionally, recent versions of the project utilized 3D printing to compose parts of the fairing, bringing a modern finish and allowing for customizations.

Electric Technology and Performance

The first prototype by Bel & Bel was developed on the base of a 250 cc Yamaha scooter, but the most current version uses electric propulsion — a choice that reinforces the futuristic character of the bike.

The creators emphasize that the production model will have performance equivalent to that of a mid-displacement motorcycle, with agile acceleration and urban usability. Although no official numbers have been released, the focus is on delivering a practical experience without abandoning the visual DNA that made the bike iconic.

In parallel, other projects inspired by Akira, such as those developed by DAB Motors and Vita Veloce Team, explored 3D bodywork and electric motors in unique versions, reinforcing the global interest in turning the anime concept into reality.

How Much Does the Akira Bike Cost in Real Life?

The price is another impressive factor. According to the developers, the functional replica of Kaneda’s bike should cost around 24 thousand euros, which is about R$ 140 thousand in direct conversion. In some markets, with taxes and customizations, this amount can easily exceed R$ 200 thousand.

In other words, it is a collector’s machine: rare, exclusive, and aimed at enthusiasts who don’t mind spending a fortune to have a piece of anime history in their garage.

The Cultural Impact of the Akira Bike

More than just a motorcycle, the replica of the bike from Akira is a symbol of how the geek universe and Japanese pop culture continue to influence design and technology today. The film anticipated discussions about artificial intelligence, megacities, and the transport of the future, and the recreation of the bike reinforces this legacy.

It is no coincidence that the bike has already been showcased at international design and technology fairs, attracting the attention of collectors, engineers, and pop culture enthusiasts.

Kaneda’s bike has ceased to be just a fictional object to become a piece of engineering. The project by Bel & Bel shows how the intersection of entertainment, design, and electric technology can create vehicles that challenge the imagination.

For Akira fans, this is the chance to see one of the greatest icons of animated cinema come off the screen and onto the streets — albeit at a price only a few can afford.
