Bets are advancing on the financial behavior of Brazilians and are beginning to be seen by some bettors as an investment, in a movement that mixes the search for quick money, risk distortion, and the weakening of long-term reserve and wealth building.

Bets have begun to occupy a deeper space in the financial lives of some Brazilians, according to the Brazilian Investor X-Ray survey, conducted by Anbima in partnership with Datafolha. The survey shows that 20% of respondents already see online betting as a form of investment, which raises an alarm about how risk, return, and financial planning are being interpreted in the country.

The data is noteworthy because it is not limited to the habit of betting for entertainment. It reveals a change in perception that brings bets closer to the logic of a financial application, even in an environment marked by unpredictability and average loss for the bettor. In this group, the monthly outlay is also higher, with an average of R$ 284.81, above the R$ 178.47 spent by those who see the practice only as fun.

What the research shows about bets and investment

Bets confuse bettors, seem like an investment, increase risk and erode wealth, shows Anbima survey.

The main warning sign from the survey is direct: a significant portion of bettors already associate bets with the idea of investment. This behavior, according to the released data, already reaches 20% of respondents, indicating that betting is no longer seen merely as leisure but is taking on the characteristics of a financial strategy for part of the public.

This scenario is concerning because investing and betting operate on very different logics. While investment planning is linked to building wealth over time, bets appear in this context as a practice associated with impulse, high risk, and expectation of immediate gain.

Who are the bettors who most see bets as an investment

The survey shows that this public is predominantly male, representing 66% of respondents, and also younger, with an average age of 35. The profile helps to understand how bets are spreading in a group that is already intensely engaged with digital platforms and with the promise of quick access to money.

Financial motivation also appears centrally in this behavior. Among bettors, 39% state they bet to get quick money in times of need, while 37% say they are seeking large sums. This reinforces the interpretation that the practice is being fueled less by a wealth-building logic and more by urgency, the expectation of accelerated gain, and the search for an immediate solution.

The numbers that explain why the alarm has grown

The survey data helps to measure the size of the distortion. Those who consider bets an investment spend, on average, R$ 284.81 per month. Among those who treat the practice only as entertainment, the monthly average drops to R$ 178.47.

This difference shows that the wrong perception of investment tends to push a portion of bettors towards a greater financial commitment. When a person starts to believe they are investing, not betting, the chance of increasing risk exposure grows along with the amount directed to this type of practice.

Why experts see a serious flaw in risk comprehension

Financial educator and investment advisor Paula Pellegrini states that this behavior reveals a flaw in risk comprehension. According to her, the confusion arises from the combination of financial illiteracy and emotional stimuli, in an environment where betting activates immediate reward mechanisms in the brain.

This analysis helps to understand why so many people start to mix luck with strategy. The problem is not just in the spending itself, but in the interpretation of the act of betting as if it had the same logic as a thought-out, structured investment oriented towards a probable future return.

What changes in practice when bets occupy the space of investment

When bets start competing for space with financial planning, the impact goes beyond the amount spent in a month. Exchanging long-term wealth building for a logic of quick gains weakens the ability to build a reserve, organize goals, and take advantage of instruments that generate returns over time.

Marilia Fontes reinforces this point by saying that betting doesn’t accumulate wealth, but consumes resources. In the explanation provided, investing means giving up consumption today in exchange for a probable return in the future, whether through interest, profits, or rent. Betting, on the other hand, goes in the opposite direction because, on average, the bettor loses.

How bets affect wealth building

The research indicates that the confusion between betting and investing directly compromises the logic of wealth accumulation. Those who direct around R$ 284 per month to bets, without an emergency fund, compromise not only their immediate financial security but also their ability to build wealth over time.

This point is significant because the monthly amount, when shifted from a bet to an organized financial structure, could serve another function in the investor’s financial life. When consumed in bets, it no longer strengthens liquidity, protection, and wealth growth.

What the data shows about reserves and financial fragility

The rise of bets is also accompanied by signs of deterioration in financial indicators. Among bettors, only 23% managed to save in 2025, while 25% have no savings at all.

These numbers reinforce the interpretation that the practice is not isolated from the rest of one’s financial health. On the contrary, it is connected to a scenario where the person takes more risks, has a lower capacity to save, and becomes more vulnerable to unforeseen events. This increases the weight of the problem and helps explain why experts treat the issue as a growing warning.

What experts recommend in this scenario

The main recommendation presented is that bets should not have a place within an investment strategy. Paula Pellegrini states that the foundation of one’s financial life needs to start with an emergency fund, defining goals, and structuring capital among liquidity, growth, and protection.

This guidance brings the debate back to more concrete ground. Instead of seeking shortcuts through betting, the proposal is to first organize the investor’s financial foundation. Only after that does it make sense to think about allocating resources in a manner consistent with goals, risk, and time horizon.

Why the rise of bets raises a greater alarm in Brazil

What makes this scenario more concerning is the speed at which bets are blending with the concept of investment. When an online bet starts to be seen as a way to build wealth, the country enters a zone of financial confusion where high risk takes on the appearance of a rational strategy.

This happens in a context where quick gains seem seductive, especially for those under financial pressure or seeking an immediate way out. The result is an environment where wealth building loses ground, planning recedes, and betting comes to occupy a place that should be reserved for building financial security.

Do you believe that bets are being overly normalized as a financial gain alternative in Brazil?
