Toyota Increases The Bet In The EV Race, Targeting Tesla And BYD With An Ambitious Production Goal.

With the wave of the electric vehicle revolution impacting the automotive industry, Toyota recently showcased its vision for the future, further intensifying the global race dominated by names like Tesla and BYD. Remember that this week the Japanese company revealed a ‘revolutionary’ battery capable of reducing the price of electric cars by 40%.

Shifting Gears: A Tripled Increase

In a strategic move to stay at the forefront, Toyota announced its aspiration to produce an impressive number of 600,000 electric vehicles by 2025. This ambitious leap represents triple its previous benchmark, which aimed for 190,000 EVs by 2024. To put that in context, Toyota’s electric adventure resulted in the sale of 24,000 EVs in 2022 and plans to increase sales to 150,000 in the following year, 2023.

Although Toyota’s electric sales figures in the U.S. may currently fall short of the giant that is Tesla, they do not remain discouraged. With plans to introduce up to 10 new models under the Toyota and Lexus electric brands, the horizon looks promising. Set to debut by 2026, the market should expect electrified innovations in the near future.

Global Expansion And New Projects

Sources indicate the much-anticipated electric version of the widely celebrated Hilux pickup, possibly making its grand debut in Thailand within the year. Meanwhile, electric SUV enthusiasts in the U.S. and China can expect new releases next year. Notably, an American assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, is preparing to launch a three-row electric SUV. BYD is facing challenges in gaining market share in France under Macron’s management.

In a contrasting perspective, while Toyota proudly led electric vehicle sales in the U.S. with a remarkable sale of over 20,000 plug-in vehicles in the first half of 2023, its pure electric vehicle numbers have room for improvement. Its total reached 4,776 BEVs by June 2023, including the bZ4X crossover and the Lexus RZ 450e.

However, even if Toyota realizes this dream, the gap between them and market leaders like Tesla and BYD may remain substantial. Just for comparison, Tesla projected production of an impressive 1.8 million EVs in 2023. Its global expansion plans are in full swing, with new Gigafactories emerging in locations like Mexico and a possible facility in India, focusing on an affordable EV priced at only $24,000.

In a final note, Toyota unveiled its future electric plans on September 19, 2023. This revelation showcased significant advancements in its Japanese production facilities. Taking a page from Tesla‘s book, the improvements include innovations such as giga casting, modular structures, solid-state battery production lines, and much more.

The future of the automotive world, including electric vehicles, appears to be rapidly progressing, and with industry giants like Toyota, Tesla, and BYD pushing the limits, the road ahead promises to be exciting.
