ABB Electric Engineering Vital to H2 Energy’s Giant Hydrogen Project
ABB, a leader in technological innovations, is undertaking a critical mission in Denmark, providing specialized knowledge in electric engineering for the monumental green hydrogen plant of H2 Energy Esbjerg ApS. With the ambitious goal of producing 90,000 tons annually, the project promises to be a landmark in sustainable energy production, equivalent to 1.9 million barrels of oil per year.
Green Advancement: Collaboration for Decarbonization
At the heart of the project, scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2023, ABB will apply its vast experience in the Power-to-X (PtX) sector, further consolidating its position as a driving force in the advancement of green hydrogen. With similar projects in Sweden, Norway, and other Danish locations, ABB is well positioned to take this venture to the forefront of the European energy transition.
Energy Pioneering in Esbjerg
With operations expected to begin in 2027, the unit in Esbjerg is designed to convert offshore wind energy into green hydrogen, significantly contributing to emission reductions in heavy industry and road transport. This project not only provides a source of clean energy but also paves the way for the creation of green electronic fuels, such as methanol and ammonia.

Strategic Partnership for Energy Efficiency
“ABB is committed to supporting the EU strategy for renewable hydrogen,” emphasizes Per-Erik Holsten, Head of Northern Europe at ABB Energy Industries. Collaboration with H2 Energy Esbjerg ApS, according to Julian O’Connell, is vital to ensure reliable and efficient energy during the production and distribution of green hydrogen.
Economic and Environmental Impact
The project is not only expected to create around 60 permanent jobs but also to provide enough hydrogen to fuel more than 10,000 trucks annually, serving half of Denmark’s fleet and the needs of heavy industry. This is a significant step toward a greener and more sustainable Denmark.
Global Hydrogen Vision
According to the International Energy Agency’s Global Hydrogen Review, the growth of low-emission hydrogen projects is at an exponential pace, with the potential to reach up to 24 Mt per year by 2030, provided all projects come to fruition.
