Since April 15, 2024, the city of Resplendor, in Minas Gerais, with its 17,200 inhabitants, has been the stage for a unique economic transformation in Brazil.
With the implementation of Ubérrima, the country’s first local currency, residents have experienced a new financial dynamic designed to strengthen the local economy.
As reported by the portal Valor Econômico, this change arose from a partnership between the Municipal Government of Resplendor and Sebrae Minas Gerais.
Details About Ubérrima
Ubérrima, abbreviated as UB$, was launched with the goal of retaining wealth in the municipality and increasing the number of local transactions.
Created by Municipal Law 1206 of 2022, the currency has five different values: 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 ubérrimas, with each unit being worth the same as one real (R$ 1.00).
The investment for printing 70,000 bills was R$ 80,000, demonstrating the city’s commitment to revitalizing its economy.
Objectives And Impacts Of The New Currency
The main objective of Ubérrima is to encourage consumption within the municipality, ensuring that the wealth generated remains in the community.
As the currency is not accepted outside of Resplendor, residents are encouraged to spend locally, promoting a positive economic cycle.
So far, about 50 commercial establishments have adopted the new form of payment, displaying notices at the entrances to inform customers.

Acceptance And Regulation
It is important to note that, although not mandatory, the acceptance of Ubérrima has been growing among local merchants.
Those who have chosen to participate in the project highlight the benefits of keeping money circulating within the city.
According to the municipal government, the new currency has been well received by the population, who see it as an opportunity to strengthen the local economy and support businesses in Resplendor.
Furthermore, the municipal government states that merchant participation has increased, and new projects are being planned to expand the use of the currency.
Additionally, the administration is considering implementing additional incentives for businesses that accept Ubérrima, aiming to further increase its popularity and effectiveness.
