The life of a long-distance truck driver is often marked by exhausting shifts, constant pressure, and long periods away from family. Even so, thousands of professionals continue to face the roads daily with the expectation that all this sacrifice will be rewarded in the future.

It was precisely this hope that accompanied a former professional driver for decades. However, upon reaching retirement, the reality encountered was quite different from what was imagined. The story was published on June 9, 2026, in a report by the portal McLaren Automóveis and signed by Rafael Monteiro de Almeida. According to the publication, the case illustrates a situation faced by many road transport professionals.

Over the years, he traveled thousands of kilometers transporting heavy loads, facing traffic jams, tight deadlines, and shifts often extended to the physical limit. As is the case with countless truck drivers, the routine involved little rest, improvised meals at roadside stops, and numerous nights sleeping inside the vehicle’s cabin.

While many families gathered daily for dinner or to celebrate special occasions, he was often hundreds of kilometers away. The job required constant presence on the roads and left little room for family life.

A career built under pressure and physical wear

The profession of truck driver is among those that require a high level of attention, physical endurance, and the ability to handle unpredictable situations.

In addition to driving, many professionals also participate in loading and unloading goods, checking cargo, securing materials, and strictly meeting delivery schedules.

Over the years, the impacts of this routine tend to appear. Chronic back pain, knee problems, sleep disturbances, and psychological wear are frequent complaints among long-distance drivers.

Even in the face of these difficulties, many workers believe that the effort will be compensated by a retirement capable of ensuring financial stability. However, the retirement reality does not always match this expectation.

In the case reported by the article, the former driver received a public pension of around 1,187 euros per month, a value considered common for various professionals who relied solely on legal social security coverage, without private or corporate supplements.

For those who spent decades working in exhausting conditions, the amount was received with frustration.

What makes retirement smaller than expected

One of the main reasons for reduced benefits is related to the contribution history.

Periods of unemployment, sick leave, and years with lower pay can directly impact the final retirement calculation. Additionally, there is another factor often overlooked during the professional life.

Many truck drivers receive night bonuses, productivity bonuses, daily allowances, and other payments that significantly increase the monthly income. However, not all these amounts are fully included in the social security calculation base.

CFA: the alternative created to reduce the impact of the profession’s wear

Among road transport professionals, there is a specific mechanism designed to allow an early exit from the labor activity. It is the CFA, created in the late 1990s to serve workers subjected to especially exhausting conditions.

The proposal is simple: to offer a transition income for drivers who wish to leave the profession before the traditional retirement age.

The benefit functions as a kind of financial bridge between the end of professional activity and the start of regular retirement.

However, access to the CFA depends on specific criteria.

Among them, usually are:

  • Long period of work with vehicles over 3.5 tons;
  • Exercise of activities related to the transport of goods, passengers, or special cargo;
  • Regular contributions to specific funds responsible for financing the benefit.

Depending on the mode of transport and the applicable rules, some professionals may receive between 70% and 75% of the average remuneration used as a calculation base.

Despite this, not everyone can fully take advantage of this alternative.

In the case reported by the news, the former driver worked in areas that could allow access to the system but did not accumulate enough contribution time to the responsible fund. As a result, the amount received during the transition was far below the initial expectation.

Financial planning becomes increasingly important

The experience described in the report reinforces a growing concern among pension specialists.

Relying solely on public retirement can pose a risk for professionals engaged in physically demanding activities.

Therefore, several recommendations are usually made during active life.

Among them are:
