Constitutional Amendment Proposal approved by the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas officially updates the state flag to include all existing municipalities and establishes automatic updates whenever there are changes in the territorial division.
Amazonas will have a new version of its official flag. The Legislative Assembly of the State of Amazonas (Aleam) approved, on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, a Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC) that alters the main state symbol to officially represent all 62 municipalities of Amazonas. The change replaces the previous model, which had only 25 stars, with a new configuration of 62 stars, reflecting the current territorial organization of the state.
The information was released by g1, based on the approval of the proposal by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Amazonas. According to the report, the change seeks to update an official symbol that has remained practically unchanged since the 1980s and adapt it to the administrative reality of the state.
In addition to modernizing the flag of Amazonas, the proposal creates a mechanism that avoids new legislative changes whenever there are changes in the number of municipalities. Thus, the design itself will be updated automatically, preserving the visual pattern already known by the population.

Amazonas Flag Changes from 25 to 62 Stars
The main change approved by Aleam increases the number of stars present in the blue field of the flag. Until then, the state symbol displayed 25 stars, as established by a law from 1982.
At the time, this design referred to the number of cities existing in Amazonas in August 1897. Additionally, the composition paid homage to the departure of Amazonas troops for the War of Canudos, one of the most significant historical events in the country.
With the approval of the PEC, the flag will now display 62 stars, a number that corresponds to the 62 municipalities currently existing in Amazonas. Thus, the official symbol now represents the entire territorial division of the state more accurately.
According to the approved text, the proposal follows a logic similar to that used in the flag of Brazil, which also receives updates whenever there are changes in the national territorial organization.
Update will be automatic whenever there are changes in the municipalities
Another important point of the proposal establishes a system of automatic update for the Amazonas flag. With this, future changes in the number of municipalities will not depend on a new constitutional amendment.
If new municipalities are created, the blue rectangle of the flag will automatically receive new stars, maintaining the original design.
On the other hand, if a municipality ceases to exist, the corresponding star will be removed from the state symbol.
Additionally, if there is a merger between municipalities, the stars representing the former cities will be removed. Then, a single new star will be inserted to represent the newly created municipality.
This mechanism seeks to keep the flag permanently updated and aligned with the administrative reality of the state.
Proposal proceeds to official publication
The Proposed Constitutional Amendment was processed under urgent regime in the Legislative Assembly of the State of Amazonas. During the process, the text went through the internal committees and was also approved by the plenary of Aleam.
Now, the proposal proceeds to the House’s Board of Directors, responsible for the official publication of the amendment. Only after this stage will the change officially come into effect.
The approval represents a historic change for one of the main symbols of Amazonas. In addition to officially recognizing the 62 municipalities of Amazonas, the new rule ensures that future territorial changes are automatically reflected in the flag, preserving its function of representing the entire state in an updated manner.
