The GNA I Thermal Power Plant, at the Açu Port, operated for only four days. According to the company, the problem has been resolved and the UTE is now operational.
Four days after entering commercial operation, the GNA I thermal power plant, located at the Açu Port in São João da Barra, Rio de Janeiro state, experienced technical problems posing a risk to the gas supply system and was disconnected from the National Interconnected System (SIN) on Monday, the 20th, at 11:38 AM. The information was confirmed yesterday by the National Electric System Operator (ONS). The Disconnection of UTE GNA I
In a statement, ONS reported that, “despite this unplanned disconnection, there are other resources that can be used to minimize the impacts of this absence in energy generation from the GNA I thermal power plant and meet the needs of the SIN.”
One measure that has been adopted by the agency is the Voluntary Demand Reduction (RDV) program for large industrial consumers, and the energy-saving incentive program for residential consumers and small businesses. On Wednesday, the technical group of the Electric System Monitoring Committee (CMSE) approved an additional reduction of 205 megawatts (MW) in the demand of large industrial consumers.

The Thermal Power Plant Resumes Energy Generation, Says ONS
The GNA I thermal power plant has been reconnected to the National Interconnected System (SIN), after undergoing maintenance to correct technical problems that posed risks to the gas supply system, reported the National Electric System Operator (ONS).
On September 15, Aneel – the National Electric Energy Agency authorized the operation of the GNA I thermal power plant, starting September 16. The facilities are located at the Açu Port in São João da Barra, Rio de Janeiro state. The UTE will be powered by natural gas and will have a capacity to produce 1,338.30 megawatts (MW), enough to supply 4 million people.
Aneel’s director-general, André Pepitone, says that the entry of this thermal power plant will be very beneficial for the sector, especially in the current context. The energy generated by the UTE located at the Açu Port will be injected into the system in the Southeast region, the most affected by the drought of reservoirs, being sufficient to meet 4 million inhabitants, emphasizes the executive.
The water crisis caused by lack of rain consequently results in a drop in water storage in the reservoirs of hydroelectric plants and the National Electric System Operator (ONS) had to activate thermal power plants to ensure energy supply to the country. However, the energy generated in thermal plants is more expensive and causes an increase in electricity bills. At the end of August, the government and the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) announced a new level of tariff flag.
