Considered One of the Main Celebrations of National Surfing, Competition Launches Official Website and Announces Opening of Registration

Beautiful beaches from north to south of the country and huge waves to surf. Those who enjoy this scenery better prepare themselves, as the Brazilian Ocyan Big Wave Award is back! After hosting the largest celebration in its history in 2023, the event, which rewards the most impressive performances on the largest waves of the Brazilian coast, is coming strong for its 6th edition. And it already arrives with double news: launch of the official website of the Brazilian Ocyan Big Wave Award 2024 and opening of registration for the competition considered one of the main celebrations of national surfing.

On the portal www.brasileirodeondasgrandes.com.br, professional and amateur surfers, as well as photographers and videographers, will have the opportunity to submit photo or video records of the biggest waves surfed in three categories, for both men and women: Surf, Bodyboard, and Bodysurf. The categories are: Biggest Wave of the Year, Best Wave of the Year (female and male), Best Bodysurf Wave, Best Bodyboard Wave, and Best Wipeout. Registrations will be open until March 31st. Waves surfed between 04/01/23 and 03/31/24.

Last year, the competition received nearly 500 registrations. The overwhelming majority was from the state of Rio de Janeiro, followed by Espírito Santo, Santa Catarina, Bahia, São Paulo, and Pernambuco. There was also a record of female participation, with over 75 big waves surfed by women, in addition to the tremendous reach of over 28 million people on social media.  This year, the organization aims to continue breaking records from previous years by increasing the number of registrations and the presence of female surfers.

According to Guilherme Braga, the event organizer,  “Last year was marked by many extreme moments of nature in a very atypical year with a lot of heat in winter in the southeast and several phenomenal swells that hit the south of Brazil and the coast of Rio, especially. Recently, at the turn of the year, we also had strong waves in Noronha; everything indicates that it will be another year of fierce disputes among the various regions of the country and fearless surfers from all over Brazil.”

Once again, the event will open doors for local surfers from any region of Brazil to have the opportunity to compete with nationally recognized athletes. Moreover, the Award continues to prove that the Brazilian coastline has big waves to offer. The finalist competitors will be announced at the beginning of April, and the awards ceremony will take place in Rio de Janeiro, also in April.

Athletes Open the Year with International Victory

Big Riders and Watermen of worldwide recognition such as Lucas Chumbo, Michelle Des Bouillons, and Pedro Scooby have already started the year collecting victories. The guys just won the title of best duo, and Chumbo also won the male individual event in Nazaré Big Waves, in Portugal. Michele Des Bouillons is also warming up. The athlete secured second place in the women’s individual event in Nazaré.

The three participated in the last edition of the Brazilian Ocyan Big Wave Award. At that time, Chumbo won in the best wipeout category for a wave surfed at the Laje de Gardenal, in Rio de Janeiro, and Michele finished in third place in the Ocyan Women’s Wave of the Year category, facing the waters of Laje de Manitiba, also in Rio de Janeiro. Scooby was at the venue and enjoyed the awards ceremony alongside his son Dom, 11 years old.

Sponsorships

The Brazilian Ocyan Big Wave Award has Master sponsorship from  Ocyan and co-sponsorship from Lyra Navegação, Media Partnership with Canal Woohoo and Ricosurf Website, Kauza Organization and Extreme Club.

“Supporting this award for the third consecutive year is not only about promoting one of the most popular and democratic sports in Brazil, surfing, but also reinforcing our love for the sea, our terrain, from where all the energy and vocation of Ocyan and its businesses come from,” celebrates André Luiz Barros, Communication, Social Responsibility, and Diversity Manager at Ocyan.
