Banco da Amazônia and World Bank Sign Credit Operation of US$ 100 Million to Accelerate Clean Energy Projects in the Legal Amazon, Promoting Social Inclusion and Reducing Dependence on Diesel.
In an unprecedented initiative, Banco da Amazônia is finalizing a credit operation of US$ 100 million with the World Bank, intended to boost clean energy projects and the energy transition in the Legal Amazon. The central goal is to reduce electricity generation costs and expand access to renewable sources, especially in communities that still rely on fossil fuels, such as diesel.
The operation, which will have the guarantee of the Federative Republic of Brazil, represents an important step in the national strategy for decarbonization and sustainable development.
Financing Prioritizes Solar Energy, Biomass, and Small Hydropower Plants
The program, dubbed Acceleration of the Energy Transition in the Amazon, will finance a series of initiatives aimed at the generation of solar energy, small hydropower plants, biomass, and hybrid systems — models that combine renewable sources with battery storage and the complementary use of diesel.

After 14 years of construction and a diplomatic crisis that nearly led to a military confrontation over control of the Nile, Ethiopia inaugurated the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa — the dam is 170 meters high, holds 74 billion cubic meters of water, and generates 5,150 megawatts.

Brazil strengthens partnership with Germany and directs billion-dollar investment to green hydrogen in the Northeast, boosting energy innovation, increasing industrial competitiveness, and consolidating real opportunities for regional sustainable development.

While Brazil sets records in solar and wind energy, the electrical system shuts down power plants every day because the transmission lines can’t handle it — and the losses have already exceeded R$ 5 billion in three years.

While the world still relies on polluting and slow energy, the island of Samsø in Denmark has started producing 40% more energy than it consumes, with 11 turbines, projects of up to 40 million euros, and a sustainable revolution built by just 4,000 inhabitants.
In addition, the project foresees investments in electrical infrastructure, with the aim of integrating isolated systems into the NIS (National Interconnected System). This connection is essential to ensure greater efficiency and stability in energy supply, reducing costs and environmental impacts.
Training and Inclusion in the Clean Energy Sector
Another highlight of the agreement is the social investment linked to the operation. Banco da Amazônia will receive US$ 2.75 million aimed at <strong strengthening its technical capacity and training qualified labor. The initiative seeks to empower youth, women, and minorities, promoting inclusion and increasing the participation of these groups in the clean energy sector.
The project also foresees the development of new green financial products, in addition to improving the mechanisms for monitoring sustainable projects. During the preparatory phase, the institution had already received US$ 500,000 in non-refundable resources from the World Bank for technical assistance in structuring the proposal.
Thus, the collaboration between Banco da Amazônia and the World Bank reinforces the strategic role of financial institutions in financing the energy transition in Brazil. The operation consolidates the commitment to regional sustainability, encouraging the use of clean technologies and strengthening local economies.
With the advancement of this project, the Legal Amazon positions itself as one of the main hubs for experimentation and implementation of clean energy in the country, combining development, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
