Belo Horizonte, located in the heart of Minas Gerais, will transform into the capital of mining discussion on September 19 and 20. This event, V National Meeting of Mining Cities, stands out as an essential milestone in the Brazilian mining calendar and is a coordinated effort by the Association of Mining Municipalities of Minas Gerais and Brazil (AMIG) to make Brazil a leader in the sector, as well as in the Amazon, where projects are underway to boost the copper, aluminum, nickel, and cobalt markets for the year 2023.
In the grand auditorium of the Court of Auditors of the State (TCE) in Belo Horizonte, the congress aims to be a meeting point for mayors, municipal managers, area specialists, representatives of mining companies, members of civil society, and government authorities from all over Brazil. The main objective? To outline the path for the future of mining in Brazil, focusing on a robust and respected National Mining Agency (ANM). But it is worth remembering that Minas Gerais does not rely solely on the mineral sector; renewables and solar panel factories are highlights in the city.

The Call for ANM Reform
“It has become unfeasible to have a ANM in tatters. This is the time to address this issue involving the municipalities affected by mining and all the experts in the field,” declares José Fernando Aparecido de Oliveira, president of AMIG and mayor of Conceição do Mato Dentro (MG).
Strengthening and Municipal Participation
Focusing on the theme “Mining and Municipalities: Enhancing Results and Mitigating Impacts,” the congress highlights the crucial need to empower municipalities in overseeing and promoting mining activities. José Fernando emphasizes that the current management regarding mineral geology needs to evolve, not the other way around. “The goal is to collaborate with local legislations and strengthen the relationship with ANM so that the mining municipalities, which even seek international assistance, can truly influence decisions that impact their territories,” he reinforces.
To deepen the discussion on the landscape and challenges of mining in Brazil, the meeting in Belo Horizonte, a city that even has some job openings, will feature the expertise of AMIG consultants, as well as renowned names such as Caio Mário Trivellato Seabra Filho, director of ANM; Daniel Pollack, superintendent of Revenue Collection and Inspection at ANM; and Maurício Angelo, a researcher focused on sustainable development.
With Belo Horizonte establishing itself as a hub for discussion on mining in Minas Gerais, the V National Meeting of Mining Municipalities promises to shape the future trajectory of the sector in the country.
