New Mining Initiatives Emerge in the Amazon, Promising Higher Production of Metals Like Copper and Nickel, and Growing Job Opportunities.
The rich geodiversity of the Amazon, encompassing states like Acre, Amazonas, and Pará, has been attracting robust investments in the mining sector. However, maintaining sustainable practices to limit socio-environmental impacts and ensure economic viability is crucial, including, this is one of the main demands of the leading mining companies in Brazil that will meet in Belo Horizonte this year. The logistical complexity, especially for emerging projects, and the need for environmental licenses are just some of the barriers that miners face.
In 2022, Ero Brasil breathed new life into its copper mine project in Tucumã, Pará. The goal? To double its copper production by June 2024, reaching an impressive 110 thousand tons annually. With an investment of US$ 305 million, it’s not just a mine, but a complex that includes a processing plant and other vital infrastructure. To tackle the climatic and logistical challenges of the Amazon, the company focuses on adaptive strategies, considering the intense rains and the extensive distance to ports.
Expanding the Aluminum Horizon
Mineração Rio do Norte is heavily investing in the New Mines Project (PNM), aiming to extend the lifespan of its operations by 15 years. Highlighting that SSM Brasil, in the same sector, also announced the opening of a new factory in Pernambuco with 1,200 job vacancies. This project will add more sustainability to the aluminum production chain, which has high demand in sectors such as energy and transportation. With a commitment to preserving jobs in the region, the PNM also promises to strengthen socio-environmental initiatives and contribute to local economic growth.

Horizonte Minerals: Betting on Nickel and Cobalt
Horizonte Minerals, focused on nickel and cobalt, is optimistic about its two large projects in Pará: Araguaia Nickel and Vermelho Project. Both stand out for their scale, low cost, and sustainability. While Araguaia aims to produce 29,000 tons of nickel annually by 2024, Vermelho focuses on the battery market for electric vehicles, promising significant production of nickel and cobalt.
With the support of the Secretary of Environment and Sustainability of the State of Pará, the Araguaia Nickel Project is advancing quickly, preparing to start its production. By May 2023, construction was 58% complete, showing considerable progress.
Developments in mining in the Amazon are promising. With the right combination of technology, investment, and sustainable practices, the future of copper, aluminum, nickel, and cobalt in the region looks bright, bringing not only economic progress but also significant job opportunities.
