A Highway So Busy That, During Rush Hours, It Looks More Like an Open-Air Parking Lot. This Is the Reality of BR-324. It Connects the Capital, Salvador, to the Interior of the State, Being Vital for the Transport of Goods, the Movement of Workers, and the Dispatch of Production.
However, over the years, BR-324 has also become synonymous with slow traffic, potholes, accidents, and a lot of frustration. Now, after decades of promises and delays, the federal government has announced a new phase: the much-anticipated duplication of one of its most critical sections.
Understand the Urgency of the Duplication on BR-324
Anyone who has had to travel on BR-324 knows that the current situation borders on chaos, especially in the urban stretch of Feira de Santana. Traffic jams are constant, especially during rush hours. Precious hours are wasted in endless lines.
The local commerce also feels the repercussions. Goods arrive late, freight costs increase, and consumers pay the final bill. From a safety standpoint, the data is alarming: the stretch is one of the most dangerous, with rear-end collisions, runovers, and accidents with fatalities.

Thousands of houses in Brazil have slabs and pillars concreted with construction site mixers, and most owners are unaware that, without strict control of the dosage, this can compromise the structure’s strength and create risks that only appear years later, according to engineers and technical standards.
Since the end of the Via Bahia concession in May 2025, the stretch has been receiving emergency maintenance from DNIT. However, the traffic volume is so intense that any temporary solution is insufficient. Therefore, the duplication of this lane is an urgent intervention.
The Strategic Stretch of Feira de Santana
The duplication contract has just been signed. It covers a stretch of 7.2 km of BR-324, between km 512.50 and km 519.70. This part of the highway is within the urban perimeter of Feira de Santana, one of the largest cities in Bahia and one of the biggest road junctions in the Northeast.
The work will be executed with a budget of R$ 99.4 million. This significant amount, considering the relatively short stretch, demonstrates the complexity of the intervention. It involves roadway duplication, implementation of safety devices, drainage, and improvements in signage. For the local commerce and the over 600,000 residents of the city, the work is a matter of mobility and quality of life.
How the Work Will Be Executed: Phases and Deadlines

The execution of the duplication of BR-324 is projected to take up to 29 months. The contractual completion is estimated for November 2026. The responsible company will be CSS Construtora S.A., the winner of the bidding in May 2025. The project will be developed in three phases:
Mobilization and Site Preparation: This phase involves organizing the construction site. Survey teams will carry out detailed land surveys. DNIT and the construction company will conduct expropriations, if necessary, with the appropriate compensations.
Execution of Duplication: At this stage, the work will begin to transform the highway. There will be widening of the existing lane, creating a new driving lane in each direction. The new pavement will use high-performance asphalt. Turnarounds and controlled accesses will be constructed. An efficient drainage system will be implemented to drain rainwater. Protective barriers (rails) will be installed at critical points. The highway will receive a complete upgrade in signage.
Finishing, Testing, and Release: In the final stretch, technical tests will be conducted to verify the strength and quality of the pavement. A complete analysis of the installed safety devices will be carried out. After the tests are approved, the stretch will be opened to traffic.
What the Duplication of BR-324 Means for Bahia
During the construction phase, the duplication of BR-324 will generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs in Feira de Santana. In the long term, the improvement in traffic flow will reduce logistics costs for businesses. Dairy producers from Santo Estevão, for example, will have faster and safer routes.
In addition to the benefits for Feira de Santana, all travelers passing through the city will be positively impacted. Students will have a safer and faster route. Ambulances and emergency vehicles will gain agility.
The Ministry of Transport has already indicated that other segments of BR-324 and BR-116 in Bahia should receive interventions. Sections like Simões Filho to Amélia Rodrigues and Feira de Santana to Capim Grosso are among the most cited for the next phases of duplication. These new investments could create a modern logistics corridor, changing the face of BR-324 across its entire length.
The duplication in Feira de Santana is just the beginning of a larger transformation. The Ministry of Transport announced a investment package of R$ 500 million for improvements on BR-324 and BR-116. There is a growing pressure from business associations, transportation unions, and the public for the next segments of duplication to be bid out.
What do you think about this duplication of BR-324? Do you believe that this project will actually come to fruition and provide an exceptional and essential triumph for the people of Bahia? Leave your opinion in the comments.
