Economic Recovery Drives High Diesel Consumption in 2022 and Fuel Sales Expected to Reach 62.6 Billion Liters!
Domestic Diesel Consumption Exceeds Petrobras Production – which is not sufficient to meet domestic demand and, to ensure that the market continues to be supplied on an economic basis and without risks of shortages, Brazil imports over 30 thousand tons of Russian diesel.
The imports of oil from Russia intermediated in July by the Brazilian government occur due to the economic recovery and the increase in Brazilian agricultural production in the 2021/2022 harvest. Additionally, importing fuel from Russia came as an alternative to the United States – a traditional supplier to Brazilians, now facing competition from Europeans amid the impacts of the war in Ukraine.

Despite Brazil purchasing Russian diesel, as Bolsonaro reported, the country is expected to reach historic sales of the product in the second half of 2022, according to a survey by the Energy Research Company (EPE).

For next year, the projection is even higher, reaching 63.5 billion liters, which would represent a new record — an increase of 1.4% compared to this year. In a statement, Petrobras confirmed the trend and stated that the domestic market should surpass last year’s diesel consumption results.
35 Million Liters of Russian Diesel Arrived at the Port of Santos in July
According to information from the Minister of Mines and Energy, Adolfo Sachsida, by the end of September, a shipment of about 35 million liters of Russian diesel arrived at the port of Santos, coming from the Port of Saint Petersburg, Russia.
According to the largest port terminal in the country, this is the ship NS Pride, registered under the Liberian flag; the minister also projected new shipments arriving this month of October.
According to reports from the ANP, since August, with the start of the period of higher diesel demand in Brazil, the agency granted 20 import licenses for a total of 61.8 thousand tons of fuel from Russian origin to two importers to avoid the risk of shortages and high prices in the country.
