Discover How Brazilians Can Join the American Police With Just a Work Permit, Taking Advantage of the High Demand for Officers and Benefits That Include Vacation, Health Insurance, and Pension

Since January 2024, Brazilians can be police officers in the USA with just a work permit. In states like California and Illinois, due to laws passed in recent years, immigrants can join and serve in police forces.

The opportunity arose with the implementation of the Bill HB3751, passed in July 2023 and in effect since the beginning of 2024, which authorizes municipalities in these states to hire immigrants with legal documentation for police positions.

According to the legislation, candidates need to have a work visa, lawful permanent resident (LPR) status, temporary protected status (TPS), or be beneficiaries of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). The text also allows these professionals to carry firearms in accordance with federal laws.

The measure has attracted the attention of Brazilians with security experience who wish to continue their careers in the United States without the need to become American citizens.

Salaries Can Exceed 12 Thousand Dollars Per Month

Candidates approved to be police officers in the USA receive a salary during the training period. In the case of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), for example, the starting amount is 7,400 dollars per month during the six months of the academy. After the one-year probational period, earnings can exceed 10,300 dollars per month, which is approximately 60 thousand reais, not including bonuses and extras.

In addition to the base salary, officers receive patrol bonuses, automatic annual raises, cost of living adjustments (COLA), health and dental insurance, paid vacation, and parental leave. Disability retirement is also available upon completion of basic training.

According to the official LAPD website, officers in salary progression can earn more than 124,000 dollars per year, solidifying the career as one of the most attractive for immigrants with training in public safety.

Illinois and California Lead New Opportunities for Immigrants

The Illinois law follows the model of SB 960 from California, in effect since January 2023. Both regulations allow anyone legally authorized to work in the USA to apply for police positions. In some cases, experts point out loopholes that may benefit immigrants seeking regularization, as the legislation does not explicitly exclude candidates in irregular situations.

Before these changes, states like California required citizenship or permanent residency for entry into the police forces. Today, the flexibility shows how immigrant labor is being valued, allowing foreign professionals to contribute to strengthening American security forces.
