Braskem and Veolia Signed an Investment Agreement for the Construction of a Renewable Energy Plant in Alagoas. The Companies Will Create Hundreds of New Direct and Indirect Jobs.
The Veolia and Braskem officially launched this Wednesday (22), the Groundbreaking of the Clean and Efficient Energy Project, which will be built in the industrial hub in Marechal Deodoro, Alagoas. Last year, the companies reached an agreement for the production of renewable energy using steam from eucalyptus biomass and other types, such as industrial waste, bamboo, and other options to be considered. The Braskem and Veolia project will receive investments of R$ 400 million and will last for 20 years.
Renewable Energy Investments Promise to Generate Hundreds of New Jobs in Alagoas
It is important to emphasize that the project aims to generate 900 thousand tons of steam per year, representing a reduction of 150 thousand tons of Greenhouse Gases annually, which is equivalent to 30% of the emissions from Braskem’s electricity purchases in Alagoas in 2020.
During the construction phase alone, the expectation is that the project will create more than 400 direct jobs, and around 100 job positions will be generated for the operational phase.

Every time a river flows into the sea, an amount of energy equivalent to a 120-meter waterfall is silently wasted, but Japan has just inaugurated the world’s first power plant that captures this waste and transforms it into electricity 24 hours a day without sun, wind, or fuel.
The renewable energy plant in Alagoas is expected to start operations between the end of next year and the beginning of 2024, generating a substantial positive social and environmental impact for the region and the country, and is aligned with the global sustainable development strategies of Veolia and Braskem.
Focused on sustainability and productivity concepts, the solution aims to meet the precise steam demand for the continuous and high-performance operation of Braskem’s PVC factory located in Marechal Deodoro. To achieve this goal, Veolia has been developing the engineering project and begins construction of the renewable energy plant, in addition to being responsible for maintenance and operation during the 20-year contract.
Project in Alagoas Aligns with the Unsustainable Purpose of the Companies
At the companies’ plant, the preparation, processing, and mechanized storage of biomass for its conversion into sustainable steam will be carried out. With cutting-edge technology, entirely Brazilian, four industrial boilers will be installed that will operate 24 hours a day, every day of the week, thus ensuring an uninterrupted supply of precise steam for Braskem’s renewable energy production.
According to Veolia Brasil’s CEO, Pedro Prádanos, these investments are linked to the company’s purpose, which is ecological transformation, placing sustainability at the center of processes and decisions, generating production efficiency.
New Investments Consolidate Veolia and Braskem’s Commitment to the Environment
According to Veolia’s executive, the climate change and global warming scenario accelerates the urgency of initiatives aimed at decarbonization and sustainability, where industries have an important objective in diversifying their energy matrices and also in the efficient consumption of energy.
Prádanos states that the company is pleased with this investment partnership with Braskem, indicating a strong commitment and action in this direction.
Braskem’s Industrial Director in Alagoas, Hélcio Colodete, highlighted that the partnership with Veolia for the project in Alagoas reinforces the fundamental commitment to generating wealth, respecting the environment and the surrounding communities, adopting the best industry practices, and social transformation in the State. Additionally, it positions Alagoas better and as a pioneer in the development of clean energy.
