With the Promise of Generating 400 Jobs in the Construction Phase of the Eucalyptus Biomass Plant, Braskem and Veolia Begin Investments That Reach Around R$ 400 Million

Braskem and Veolia Brazil announced that they will invest around R$ 400 million for the production of renewable energy from an eucalyptus biomass plant in the state of Alagoas. The project will be developed in Marechal Deodoro, where the petrochemical company has an industrial complex that produces PVC, and promises to generate 900 thousand tons of steam per year, something that will lead to a reduction of CO2 emissions by about 150 thousand tons over 20 years of contract. In the initial phase of the plant’s construction, the company signals the generation of 400 jobs.

Job Creation at the New Biomass Plant of Braskem and Veolia Promises to Reach Hundreds of New Professionals

During the initial construction phase of the biomass plant, more than 400 direct jobs will be created, and when the plant begins operations, 100 new jobs will be generated.

The start of operations at the biomass plant is scheduled for 2023. According to Gustavo Checcucci, Director of Energy at Braskem, the eucalyptus biomass plant project adds a new source of renewable energy to the company’s energy matrix. During the announcement, Gustavo reported that the company will achieve a one-third reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in its operations in Alagoas, based on emissions from the year 2020.

Veolia’s Participation in the Project

Veolia will be responsible for managing most of the project, mainly overseeing the management of more than 5,500 hectares of eucalyptus, as well as the design of the engineering project and the construction of the eucalyptus biomass processing plants. Veolia will also be responsible for managing steam production.

The Veolia Brazil group is a reference company in Ecological Transformation. Veolia is present on all five continents and has nearly 179 thousand employees. The group is responsible for designing and implementing concrete and useful solutions for water, waste, and energy management that can help reverse various environmental situations around the world.

With its three complementary activities, the Veolia Group directly contributes to the development, accessibility, preservation, and renewal of these resources, making them available to municipalities and industrial sectors.

Braskem and Its Responsibilities with the Eucalyptus Biomass Plant Project

For its part, Braskem will invest in the adaptation of the Marechal Deodoro complex, modifying it to fit the new thermoelectric arrangement. According to the President of Veolia Brazil, Pedro Prádanos, the company is committed to increasing the implementation of sustainable and concrete solutions, creating the future solutions for Veolia’s clients.

Braskem, which already had four other partnerships for renewable energy generation in Brazil, established in 2018, continues to focus on transforming the energy matrix as one of the main pathways to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
