First commercial docking at Porto Piauí places Luís Correia on a new logistics route, with iron ore, offshore transshipment, and international destination, as the state begins an operation awaited for over a century to reduce dependence on neighboring terminals.

With the arrival of the bulk carrier Konta II in Luís Correia, on the coast of Piauí, the Porto Piauí conducted its first cargo ship docking in history on Monday (29) and opened the commercial phase of the Private Use Terminal.

The operation marked the beginning of preparations to export iron ore destined for China, on a route that now connects the state to foreign trade through its own infrastructure.

At Berth 401, an area designated for iron ore handling, the vessel was received in an operation overseen by Companhia Porto Piauí and the Brazilian Navy.

According to the Government of Piauí, the docking mobilized five companies responsible for maritime support, agency, ship operations, tugboats, and gauging, services necessary for executing the terminal’s first commercial movement.

Porto Piauí begins a new logistics phase

The entry of Konta II into the terminal changes the state’s logistics position, now having its own alternative to start the flow of large cargoes through the coast of Piauí.

Before this stage, exports requiring specialized port operations depended on structures installed in neighboring states, especially for mineral cargoes and products with higher maritime transport demand.

Around 4 PM, the ship entered the navigation channel at a reduced speed, between 5 and 3 knots, before proceeding to maneuver in the turning basin.

The docking was completed near 5 PM, in a procedure monitored by the teams involved in the operation and reported by Companhia Porto Piauí in an official state government publication.

With 109 meters in length, 26.8 meters in width, and a capacity for about 9,000 tons of iron ore per trip, the vessel will be used in the first stage of the movement.

After loading in Luís Correia, the bulk carrier will proceed to a transfer operation to an ocean-class ship, a model prepared for longer international journeys.

Iron ore will be transshipped to China

In the inaugural operation, the planned cargo is iron ore destined for China, in a model based on bulk transshipment between vessels before final loading onto an ocean-going ship.

This format allows commercial activity to begin without waiting for the completion of more complex structures necessary for large ships to dock directly at the Piauí terminal.

Under the adopted system, the ore is loaded at the Private Use Terminal in Luís Correia and transported by a smaller vessel to an anchorage area located about 37 kilometers off the coast.

In this intermediate stage, the cargo is transferred to a shuttle ship equipped with warehouses, cranes, and conveyors, a structure that functions as a support platform to complete the operation at sea.

From this point, the ore is transferred to an ocean-going ship with a capacity of over 100,000 tons, prepared to complete the international journey to the purchasing market.

Thus, the logistics chain connects mining, land transport, coastal terminal, transshipment at anchorage area, and long-distance navigation to the final destination.

Transshipment anticipates port operation

According to Companhia Porto Piauí, the chosen model can anticipate the port’s operation by up to three years by reducing the need to wait for major works before starting activities.

In addition to speeding up commercial operations, the solution aims to accommodate larger capacity vessels, which rely on intermediate alternatives when local infrastructure is still under development.

Fábio Freitas, Director of Operational Management at Porto Piauí, stated that international trade has started to seek larger ships, while many older ports have not expanded their structures at the same pace.

In the assessment released by the state government, the adopted alternative allows for gathering larger volumes and making the operation more efficient in the short term, without interrupting the terminal’s expansion planning.

Loading at the coastal terminal, moving to the anchorage area, transfer to the shuttle ship, and final loading onto an ocean-going ship form the operational sequence planned for the first export.

For this model to work, integration between port operators, support vessels, maritime control, technical teams, and companies specialized in cargo handling will be necessary.

116-year wait reaches commercial phase

The start of commercial operation also has symbolic weight because it occurs after 116 years of waiting for a dedicated structure capable of placing Piauí on maritime cargo routes.

During the docking observation, Governor Rafael Fonteles stated that the arrival of Konta II demonstrated the project’s viability and marked a stage of logistical advancement for the state.

In a statement released by the Government of Piauí, Fonteles said that the iron ore terminal will allow the shipment of more than 100,000 tons in a single ship.

The statement was recorded during the operation, which was attended by teams from Companhia Porto Piauí and marked the project’s transition to a visible stage of commercial movement.

Also mentioned by the state government’s official communication, the president of Porto Piauí, Raimundo Dias, stated that the first docking represents the beginning of a new chapter for the state.

The statement was associated with the accumulated work by professionals linked to the port company, responsible for managing the structure that began receiving cargo on the Piauí coast.

Grains are on the terminal’s horizon

In addition to iron ore, the state government points to grains as the next front of movement through Porto Piauí by 2026, as part of the plan to expand the types of cargo handled.

According to Rafael Fonteles, the structure is born with these two operational axes and may receive other types of cargo as the terminal’s operation advances in the coming commercial cycles.

The opening of the route occurs in a Northeast where consolidated ports have concentrated for decades on the shipment of agricultural, mineral, and industrial commodities, with structures already integrated into national and international logistics corridors.

For Piauí, the arrival of Konta II transforms a historical infrastructure agenda into effective port activity, with defined cargo, operation monitored by technical teams, and international destination.

The first docking also serves as a practical test for maneuvers, tugboats, cargo measurement, maritime control, and coordination between companies operating in the port environment.

Each of these stages will be decisive in measuring the terminal’s capacity to sustain new commercial operations and expand its presence on export routes.

With Konta II at Berth 401, Porto Piauí moved from a logistical promise to integrating a concrete export route for iron ore.

From this first operation, to what extent can this new structure reposition the state on international cargo routes?
