The Bidding Process for the Construction of the Angra 3 Plant Is Expected to Be Announced in March, with the Resumption of Civil Construction in October This Year

After 5 years of inactivity, the construction site of Angra 3 is set to resume work in 2021. In March, Eletronuclear intends to publish the bidding notice for the civil works of the Critical Path Acceleration Plan of the plant.

After that, around mid-May, the company aims to sign a contract with the bidding winner. As soon as these two phases are settled, Angra 3 will resume construction of the nuclear plant in the first weeks of October this year. With the resumption of these works, the goal from then on is to ensure that the plant starts operations by mid-November 2026.

Eletronuclear’s Planning and the Bidding Process for the Angra 3 Plant

The much-discussed Critical Path Acceleration Plan aims to carry out certain construction activities of the plant, even though Eletronuclear has not yet contracted the company that will handle the overall project.

Eletronuclear partnered with Eletrobras to secure the release of funds at the end of January. In 2020, the electric holding company released about R$ 1.052 billion for Eletronuclear. The forecast is that R$ 2.447 billion will be released in addition for 2021.

Stages of the Works at Angra 3

The completion of the concrete superstructure of the plant’s reactor is one of the main tasks outlined in the acceleration plan for Angra 3. Another important stage is the sealing of a steel containment sphere present at the construction site and the installation of the spent fuel tank. All these activities will be carried out in the initial phase of construction.
