The Volkswagen ID.2, promised as the most affordable electric car from the brand ($27,500), was spotted testing, solidifying itself as one of the main bets of the manufacturer for the low-cost electric vehicle market
The highly anticipated Volkswagen ID.2, which promises to be the most affordable electric model from the brand, was seen for the first time in testing, signaling that the vehicle is getting closer to mass production. With an estimated price of around €25,000 (approximately $27,500), the ID.2 aims to attract consumers looking for an economical electric car that still offers space and comfort, according to the website Electrek.
Cheap Electric Car from Volkswagen: ID.2
The concept of the Volkswagen ID.2 electric car was first revealed more than a year ago, and since then, expectations around this model have only increased. Volkswagen, which has already established itself as one of the leading manufacturers in the electric vehicle (EV) segment, bets on the ID.2 as a model that combines affordability with the reliability and space of a larger vehicle, like the Golf.
Based on the MEB platform, the same platform that supports other models in the ID lineup and electric vehicles from partner brands, such as Ford and the future Porsche Macan EV, the ID.2 is a natural evolution within Volkswagen’s strategy to popularize EVs. The vehicle is designed to offer up to 450 km of range, according to the WLTP cycle, making it a competitive option in terms of both range and price.

Design and Innovation of the Electric Car
The design of the ID.2 is a fusion of classic Volkswagen elements, drawing inspiration from icons like the Golf and the Beetle, but with a modern approach focused on the future of electric mobility. Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen’s chief designer, highlighted that the final model of the ID.2 “looks even better” than the concept presented earlier, indicating refinements that will please both brand fans and new consumers.
This electric car model, which was recently spotted testing at the famous Nürburgring track, still hides many details under the ID.3 bodywork, making a complete analysis of the exterior design difficult. However, the activity surrounding these tests suggests that Volkswagen is committed to meeting its launch schedule, despite the challenges faced by the industry.
Technology and Performance
One of the major bets of the ID.2 is the upgrade of the MEB platform to MEB+, planned for 2026. This evolution will allow the model to be even more efficient, especially in terms of software, an area in which Volkswagen is investing heavily, including strategic partnerships, such as the one recently established with Rivian.
In addition, the German automaker plans to introduce a crossover SUV version of the ID.2 soon after the hatch model is launched, expanding the range of affordable electric vehicles in its lineup.
