After Years Of Trying To Acquire A Car Factory In Brazil, Great Wall Motors Is Likely To Install Its New Factory In Ceará. The Company Also Aims For The Mercedes-Benz Factory In SP

The state of Ceará has a great chance of receiving the automotive factory project from the Chinese company Great Wall Motors, which has been trying to establish itself in Brazilian territory for some time, and now has the state’s infrastructure as its best option. In June, Cesar Augusto Ribeiro, Secretary of International Relations of the State, visited one of the company’s factories in China and also presented Ceará’s differentials.

According to Cesar Augusto, Ceará was presented with its Processing and Export Zone (ZPE) structure and the state’s differentials to attract foreign investments as a major option for the automobile company in the country. According to Augusto, it is a fantastic, innovative, and technological factory that would add significant value to Ceará.

The Secretary of Ceará also emphasized that Great Wall Motors is a major producer of electric cars, which he sees as a promising technology for the future of urban mobility. This is just one phase of an extensive negotiation that will have many more chapters.

Great Wall Motors is one of the leaders in automobile manufacturing in China and has been eyeing the Brazilian market for over a decade. The company had once attempted to purchase a factory from Mercedes-Benz in Iracemápolis (SP).

Great Wall Motors And Its Operations In Brazil

Great Wall currently no longer sells its vehicles in Brazil. In 2009, the company had an importer in the country and sold some vehicles like the Hover, a mid-size SUV with a 2.4 Mitsubishi engine that was priced at R$ 69,000 at the time.

In 2013, its executives made a series of visits to major cities in Brazil, such as Joinville, Ribeirão Preto, Salvador, and Guarulhos, before announcing the installation of a factory; however, these plans did not materialize. The company, despite not operating in Brazil, has a strong presence in South American countries through importers and has a significant market on the continent.

Among them, the Chilean market stands out, with over 2,400 registrations in 2020. In recent days, the company has made posts on its Instagram account for Brazil, showing images of the Poer, a mid-size pickup that would compete with the Toyota Hilux. The vehicle is already registered in Brazil. Another car that Great Wall Motors may launch in the Brazilian automotive market will be the premium SUV Haval H6.

Great Wall Motors Buys Mercedes-Benz Factory

According to reports, the company closed the deal with Mercedes-Benz in mid-June. The Iracemápolis factory was closed in December of last year in São Paulo and produced the C-Class and GLA models, which now belong to Great Wall Motors.

Although it has not been officially announced, the purchase is finalized. The manufacturer celebrated the acquisition in a post, providing information about the factory and stating that the assembly line meets the company’s automotive assembly standards.
