Chevrolet Announces New Onix Model for 2026 with Billion-Dollar Investments and Innovates in the SUV Market in Brazil!
The highly anticipated launch of the SUV Onix by Chevrolet has received another “spoiler” recently. The manufacturer confirmed the vehicle’s launch for 2026 as part of a massive investment of R$ 7 billion in Brazil by 2028. The announcement promises to revolutionize the compact SUV market, according to the Vrum website.
Additionally, Chevrolet revealed that R$ 1.2 billion of the investment will be directed to the Gravataí plant in Rio Grande do Sul. This amount will be used to update the Onix line and develop the new model, internally known as Project Carbon. The Onix SUV will be an entry-level SUV designed to compete with models such as Fiat Pulse, Renault Kardian, and the upcoming SUV Gol, expected in 2025.
Platform and Design of the Onix SUV
The Onix SUV will be built on the GEM platform, the same as the Onix hatch, maintaining a wheelbase of 2.55 meters. While it shares several components with the Onix, Chevrolet is committed to visually differentiating it. The new SUV will feature unique side panels, a hood, and a trunk lid, giving it a more robust and distinct look.

According to information from the Autos Segredos website, the interior of the Onix SUV will have a distinct design from the hatch. The new model will incorporate the integration between the digital instrument cluster and the multimedia center, similar to what has been seen in the new Spin and S10. This approach aims to minimize visual association with the Onix, providing a unique experience for consumers.
Intense Competition with Other SUVs
The launch of the Onix SUV promises to heat up the competition in the compact SUVs segment. With major competitors like Fiat Pulse and Renault Kardian, Chevrolet bets on a modern design, advanced technology, and energy efficiency to stand out. The focus is on offering a vehicle that combines practicality, style, and performance, meeting the demands of Brazilian consumers.
Chevrolet’s investment in Brazil demonstrates the manufacturer’s confidence in the domestic market. The Gravataí plant will be crucial in this process, not only for the production of the SUV but also for the continuous updating of the Onix line. With the introduction of new technologies and adaptation to environmental standards, Chevrolet seeks to consolidate its position as a leader in the compact and SUV segment.
Turbo Engine and Hybrid Potential
The Onix SUV will feature a 1.0 turbo engine capable of delivering up to 116 hp and 16.8 kgfm of torque, the same one used in the current Onix. In 2025, this engine will receive a direct fuel injection system to meet the emission standards of Proconve L8, which should improve its performance and fuel efficiency. Additionally, there are speculations that the model could be equipped with a 48V mild hybrid system, further enhancing its efficiency.
Before the launch of the Onix SUV, the Onix and Onix Plus models will be restyled in 2025. Launched in 2019, these models already require updates to maintain their competitiveness in the market. The expected changes include both aesthetic and technological improvements, ensuring they remain appealing to consumers.
