China Unveils Strategic Industrial Advancement. The Country Completed and Delivered Its First 110 MW Gas Turbine, Named Taihang 110, Promising to Reduce Emissions and Strengthen National Power Supply with Indigenous Technology
China has completed the assembly and delivered its first domestically developed 110 megawatt high-efficiency gas turbine. The equipment, named Taihang 110 or AGT-110, marks the beginning of a complete commercial application, being the most powerful domestic machine in its class. The announcement was made by the Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC) and reported by Xinhua news agency.
Delivery and Characteristics of the Turbine
According to AECC, the Taihang 110 features quick start-up, high thermal efficiency in combined cycle, and low maintenance requirements. It can operate on oil, natural gas, or low calorific value gases. Additionally, it is suitable for combined heat and power generation, natural gas peaking plants, and combined cycle power plants.
The turbine can also be integrated with renewable resources such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power. According to Xinhua and the portal chinanews.com, this flexibility allows direct integration into the state power grid, enhancing supply in different demand scenarios.

Environmental Impact and Power Generation
AECC claims that compared to thermal power plants of the same capacity, the turbine can reduce carbon emissions by over 1 million tons per year. In combined cycle operation, it can generate over 150,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per hour.
This volume, according to AECC, is sufficient to supply more than 10,000 households daily. Meanwhile, chinanews.com estimates that the number could reach 15,000 homes, showing different perspectives on its impact on the population.
Technological Advancements and Patents
The company emphasizes that gas turbines for heavy-duty services are considered symbols of industrial strength, as only a few nations have the capacity to develop them independently. The project involved sectors like aviation, machinery, and oil, along with other strategic industries.
According to chinanews.com, the program secured 102 patents and achieved advancements in heavy turbines, advanced materials, complete machine manufacturing, and testing and commissioning processes. These advancements have helped establish research and development platforms with independent intellectual property, paving the way for future projects.
Research Focused on Hydrogen
Alongside the deployment of the AGT-110 turbine, AECC is conducting studies on hydrogen-powered turbines. The head of the department, Lu Jibin, stated that the company has reached technical milestones in rapid hydrogen and air mixing, low-emission combustion, and stable control for this type of fuel.
While no timeline has been disclosed, AECC positions this research as a pathway to further reduce emissions as hydrogen becomes more accessible.
Operation of a Gas Turbine
A gas turbine converts the chemical energy of fuel into mechanical energy. The process involves air compression, mixing with fuel, and ignition, resulting in high-temperature and high-pressure gases.
These gases drive the turbine blades, generating rotation capable of powering electric generators or providing propulsion for aircraft and industrial equipment. This system is valued for its efficiency, reliability, and versatility.
Milestone for the Chinese Industry
AECC describes the launch of the Taihang 110 as a new stage for high-efficiency gas turbines in the country. The project transitions from development to commercial operation, solidifying the delivery of the first unit ready for electrical grid applications.
From cogeneration to peaking plants, the company sees the AGT-110 as an industrial milestone and a step toward a cleaner and more flexible energy supply.
