Uberlândia Attracts National Attention With Billion-Dollar Investment Package, Creating Thousands of Jobs and Installing the First AI Data Center in the Southeast Region. The City of Triângulo Mineiro Reinforces Its Strategic Position in the Brazilian Economic Scenario.

Uberlândia, in Triângulo Mineiro, is on its way to becoming one of the main economic development hubs in the country starting in 2025.

The second-largest city in Minas Gerais by population and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) announced this week a private investment package that exceeds R$ 10.3 billion, with an expectation of creating more than 26,000 direct and indirect jobs.

This movement, according to experts, reinforces the strategic position of the municipality in the national scenario and is expected to attract even more workers and companies to the region.

With 713,232 inhabitants, according to the 2022 Census by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Uberlândia led population growth among cities in Minas Gerais with more than 100,000 residents from 2010 to 2022, registering an increase of 18%.

The population growth is driven by job opportunities and infrastructure, elements that tend to gain strength given the volume of investments announced.

The economist and professor of the Finance graduate program at Ibmec, Gilberto Braga, explains that the city’s attraction effect should expand to neighboring municipalities.

“The trend is that nearby cities will be attracted by Uberlândia as a development hub. It is the so-called capital of Triângulo Mineiro and will attract cities as satellites that, in some way, benefit from this growth,” he stated.

According to Braga, the movement is motivated by the availability of job openings, although the cost of housing is still not a determining factor for migration to surrounding cities, as the municipality still has areas for residential expansion.

Economic Strength in the Minas Gerais Context

In the ranking of the richest cities in Minas Gerais, Uberlândia occupies the second position, with a participation of 5% in the state GDP, which is equivalent to R$ 42.8 billion.

The capital, Belo Horizonte, accounts for 12.3% of the state GDP (R$ 105 billion), followed by Contagem (4.3%), Betim (3.9%), and Nova Lima (2.5%).

In terms of population, only Belo Horizonte, with 2.3 million inhabitants, and Contagem, with 621.8 thousand residents, surpass the city in Triângulo Mineiro.

Billion-Dollar Investment and Benefited Sectors

The package announced by the city hall includes 20 companies from various sectors, such as construction, agribusiness, logistics, chemical industry, beverage and dairy production, in addition to technology.

The list includes names such as:

  • Carmeuse (chemical industry)
  • Cemig (electricity)
  • Grupo Bahamas (retail)
  • Haifa (fertilizers)
  • MRV (construction)
  • Lactalis (dairy)
  • Uberlândia Refrescos (beverages)
  • Grupo Neospace (technology)

Among the announcements, one of the most relevant is the installation of the first Data Center with Artificial Intelligence in the Southeast region, to be operated by the American company RT-One.

The project will receive an initial investment of R$ 6 billion, but does not yet have a defined deadline for the start of operations.

Another significant investment is from Lactalis, which will invest R$ 291.1 million by 2027 to build a new industrial plant and expand the local production line.

According to the city hall, part of the funds will come from multinational companies in the agribusiness industry that prefer to keep their contributions confidential.

The municipal administration attributes the result to the active prospecting policy and facilitation of processes for the opening and expansion of businesses.

Consolidation of an Economic Profile

For economist Gilberto Braga, the volume of resources reinforces sectors in which the city is already a reference, especially in agribusiness and related activities.

“If we assume that most of them are confirmed, Uberlândia will consolidate what it already excels at. In the announcements, there is a trend of investments directly or indirectly linked to agribusiness. So, there is no new vocation emerging in the city, but rather a confirmation,” he assessed.

The diversity of sectors covered, however, increases the potential for absorbing qualified and unqualified labor, which may change the local socioeconomic profile in the coming years.

Quality of Life and Regional Competitiveness

Despite the pace of growth, Uberlândia maintains characteristics that differentiate it from other urban centers of similar size.

Braga points out that, even though it is a large city, the municipality still preserves some tranquility and a more accessible cost of living compared to nearby locations of large capitals.

This combination, along with a consolidated infrastructure of services, education, and health, strengthens its competitiveness in attracting new enterprises and professionals.

The expectation is that the impact of investments will not be limited to the urban perimeter.

Economic development tends to benefit neighboring municipalities through new flows of commerce, services, and worker displacement, transforming Uberlândia into a more robust regional influence hub.

With this new investment cycle, the city positions itself strategically to lead transformations in the economy of the Brazilian interior.

The lingering question is: what will be the extent of Uberlândia’s influence on Brazil’s economic development in the coming years?
