The Model That Eletronuclear Chose to Store Fuels Is Viable Both in Terms of Safety and in Long-Term Energy Generation
Eletronuclear opted to store the used fuels from Angra 1 and Angra 2, not only for safety reasons but also while maintaining a long-term strategic policy. With significant technological development worldwide, it is expected that this material can be reused for energy generation, as it still has 95% energy content.

The American company Holtec, supplier of equipment and systems for the energy sector, is constructing a Dry Storage Unit (DSU) for Eletronuclear, an intermediate solution for the safe storage of used fuel from Angra 1 and Angra 2 – currently stored in pools inside the nuclear plant.
Marcelo Gomes, Head of the New Ventures Department at Eletronuclear, emphasizes that this method is already used in several countries. “Most countries choose the path of recycling or reusing, because the fuel that leaves the reactor has only burned 5% of what it could deliver. It still has 95% energy content to be reused. Technology is advancing significantly in this aspect. There are fast reactors that are starting to show as viable and can be fueled with this fuel.”

Trump gives a deadline, but no relief: Trump’s tariffs remain alive, threaten Brazil, and put Lula against the wall in tense negotiations in the US.
Gomes also states that the technological advances of recent years have shown that this route is safe and acceptable because the reuse capacity of this fuel will become apparent soon. “It’s a quite safe and intelligent solution, because it keeps options open. There is no smaller problem or safety issue associated.”
Holtec continues to finalize the DSU in Angra. The work and nuclear and environmental licensing procedures are underway. Regarding the irradiated fuel currently stored in the pools of Angra 1 and Angra 2 plants, the transfer of irradiated materials is only scheduled for next year.
