The model chosen by Eletronuclear to store fuel is viable both in terms of safety and long-term energy generation

Eletronuclear chose to store used fuels from Angra 1 and Angra 2, not only for safety reasons, but also in line with a long-term strategic policy. Having a great development of technology all over the world, it is expected that this material can be reused for energy generation, as it still has 95% energy content.

The American company Holtec, supplier of equipment and systems for the energy sector, is building a Dry Storage Unit (UAS) for Eletronuclear, an intermediate solution for the safe storage of fuel used in the Angra 1 and Angra 2 plants – currently stored in the pools inside the nuclear power plant.

Marcelo Gomes, Head of the Department of New Ventures at Eletronuclear, points out that this method is already used in several countries. “Most countries opt for recycling or reuse, because the fuel that comes out of the reactor only burned 5% of what it could deliver. It still has 95% energy content to be reused. Technology is advancing a lot in this regard. There are fast reactors that are beginning to prove viable and that can be supplied with this fuel”.

Gomes also says that the technological advances of recent years have shown that this route is safe and acceptable because the capacity to reuse this fuel will appear soon. “It's a very safe and smart solution because it keeps the options open. There is not the slightest problem or question of insecurity associated”.

Holtec continues in the finalization of the UAS in Angra. Nuclear and environmental licensing work and procedures are ongoing. Regarding the spent fuel currently stored in the pools of the Angra 1 and Angra 2 factories, the transfer of spent materials is only planned for next year.
