On November 13 and 14, great names in the energy industry gather in Campinas to discuss the future of energy.
Anchored at Unicamp, the EPIC (Energy Production Innovation Center) is preparing to bring its fifth conference to life. This meeting, taking place at the Eldorado Research Institute, located in Campinas (SP), marks the culmination of the first phase of research conducted in collaboration with FAPESP and the energy giant Equinor, while announcing a renewed phase with new research guidelines.
The core of the conference aims to engage a diverse range of professionals – from researchers and academics to industry leaders and government authorities. The program will feature five prominent lectures, two dynamic round tables, and presentations of the best projects developed under the auspices of EPIC. These investigations focused primarily on three axes: optimization of oil production via numerical simulation models, optimization through artificial lift and flow, and characterization and geological modeling of Brazil’s pre-salt carbonate reservoirs.
The Energy Frontier: Challenges and Innovations

Energy transformation is the focus. One of the round tables will deeply examine the impact of new technologies on the industry, with particular attention to regulatory and legal challenges. This debate will feature the expertise of representatives from Equinor, ANP, FAPESP, and CEPETRO, and will be moderated by the capable director of EPIC, Professor Denis J. Schiozer. On the other hand, Alejandro Escalona Varela from the University of Stavanger (Norway) will shed light on the challenges of energy transition, bringing a Norwegian perspective.
Three other international keynote speakers will enlighten the event with their innovative views for the industry: Reidar Brumer Bratvold, also from the University of Stavanger; Robert H. Goldstein from the University of Kansas; and renowned Canadian consultant, Francisco Alhanati. No less important, Mateus Silva Pierre from the Eldorado Institute will delve into the crucial world of cybersecurity in critical infrastructures.
Building Bridges Between Industry and Academia
The second round table of the event will focus on strengthening the ties between the academic world and the industry, represented by giants such as Shell, NORCE, Eldorado Institute, Equinor, and Texas A&M University.
Wrapping up on a high note, the director of EPIC will outline the center’s horizon. But the journey does not end there: after the conference, enthusiasts will be able to sign up for an online minicourse in English on “optimizing oil production through numerical simulation models of reservoirs,” scheduled for November 16, 17, and 23.
