With 300,000 m², more than 13,000 exhibitors, and up to 30,000 workers involved, the largest open-air market in the country moves traditions, economy, and an intense flow of visitors every week
The definition of which is the largest open-air market in the country often leads to doubts, as different cities claim the top spot in the ranking. However, according to research published by Estado de Minas, the Caruaru Market in Pernambuco clearly leads when the analyzed criteria are total area and number of vendors.
The report compared official data from Caruaru, Belo Horizonte, and Belém, explaining why the Pernambuco market occupies first place.
Dimension That Surpasses Traditional Competitors
The Caruaru Market occupies approximately 300,000 m², according to information from the city hall. This number places the space far above the 45,000 m² of the Hippie Market in Belo Horizonte and the 25,000 m² of the Ver-o-Peso Market in Belém.

Even though part of the structure is covered, the total area shows that Caruaru holds the largest space among the mentioned markets.
The report also highlights that the complex functions as a grouping of various internal markets, including the well-known Sulanca Market.
Number of Vendors Reinforces Leadership
Estado de Minas also evaluated the volume of exhibitors, another point where Caruaru excels. The city hall estimates about 8,000 vendors in the public area and 5,000 in the private area on the busiest days, totaling approximately 13,000 exhibitors.
With helpers and support teams, the activity involves around 30,000 people working simultaneously, a number much higher than that of other analyzed markets.
According to the criteria outlined in the report, Caruaru combines both the largest area and the largest number of vendors, surpassing traditional rivals mentioned as candidates for the title. Therefore, Estado de Minas concludes that the Caruaru Market is indeed the largest open-air market in Brazil, uniting dimension, diversity, and strong cultural relevance.
