Poland has begun construction of the second Miecznik-class frigate, Burza, reinforcing its Navy with British technology and modern weapons for air, naval and underwater defense.

Poland has made strategic progress in strengthening its navy by officially starting construction of its second frigate of the Miecznik class, which will be named Stock exchange (“Storm”), expanding its defense and deterrence capabilities in the Baltic Sea.

The Polish Ministry of Defense confirmed this week the start of construction work on the frigate Burza, the second vessel in the Polish Navy's ambitious modernization program. The symbolic milestone was the cutting of the first metal sheet, carried out in shipyard PGZ Shipyard, in Gdynia, the same place where the first Miecznik-class frigate is being built.

Although the ceremony did not include the laying of the keel, it represents a decisive step in the consolidation of the project that aims to strengthen Poland's naval presence in the Baltic Sea region in the face of modern threats.

Frigate Burza is the symbol of the new era of the Polish Navy

The Miecznik class is based on the renowned British Arrowhead 140 project, developed by the Babcock company.

The adoption of this model reflects the choice of a tested solution, adapted to the specific needs of the Polish Navy, and represents a technological leap forward compared to the vessels currently in service.

In total, the program foresees the construction of three multifunctional frigates, with the first scheduled to be launched in 2026.

A Stock exchange It will be a robust vessel, with a displacement of up to 7 thousand tons, a length of 138,7 meters, a beam of 19,7 meters and a draft of 5,5 meters.

The crew will have between 100 and 120 sailors, with total accommodation capacity for up to 160 people.

Its autonomy will allow it to operate for up to 30 consecutive days at sea, with an estimated maximum speed of 26 knots and a range of up to 6 nautical miles.

Air, naval and underwater combat capability

Designed to face multiple threats, the Miecznik class will feature state-of-the-art weapons. Stock exchange will be equipped with:

  • Leonardo 76mm Super Rapido Cannon, effective in short-range defense;
  • 16 RBS-15 anti-ship missiles, as main offensive armament;
  • Mk.41 VLS vertical launcher with 32 cells, compatible with CAMM family cruise and interceptor missiles.

This configuration guarantees Poland a modern naval capability, prepared to protect its maritime territory and carry out missions in cooperation with NATO allies.

Schedule

Although the beginning of the construction of the Stock exchange was marked only by a symbolic metal cutting, the event represents an important milestone within the program's schedule.

The first Miecznik class frigate is expected to be delivered between 2028 and 2030, while the second — the Stock exchange — should be completed during the 2030s.

With this, Poland strengthens its presence in the Baltic Sea and continues the modernization of its naval forces.
