Couple from Rio Grande do Sul harvests giant 978-gram tomato in organic cultivation and draws attention for its unusual size.
An unusual feat caught attention in Segredo, a municipality located about 200 kilometers from Porto Alegre. In a small organic garden of 36 square meters, a couple of rural producers harvested a giant oxheart tomato weighing 978 grams. The result impressed not only for the size of the fruit but also for the cultivation method, carried out without chemical fertilizers and following natural management practices.
Couple and giant tomato draw attention for unusual size
The fruit harvested by Luciana and Paulo Ricardo Bavaresco exceeded more than three times the weight normally recorded for the oxheart variety.
According to information shared by Luciana in an interview with Globo Rural, tomatoes of this type usually reach about 300 grams. Therefore, the specimen found on the property ended up being a surprise even for producers accustomed to the crop.

The farmer stated that she had been cultivating this variety for years but had never seen a fruit reach a similar size.
How was the giant tomato cultivated?
Despite its impressive appearance, the tomato was produced under conditions considered common within the property.
The plantation shares space with other crops grown in the garden, including:
- Lettuce;
- Chives;
- Parsley;
- Other foods produced for consumption and commercialization.
According to the producers, the management follows organic principles and does not use chemical fertilizers during the development of the plants.
Characteristics of the fruit harvested by the couple
Besides the high weight, the tomato preserved the typical characteristics of the oxheart variety. Known for its meatier pulp and irregular shape, resembling a bovine heart, the fruit also maintained the traditional flavor appreciated by the family.

Luciana highlighted that the variety presents a balance of flavor that allows for consumption raw. In a statement to Globo Rural, she explained that the tomato is not excessively sweet, but also does not have intense acidity.
Couple bets on natural solutions to protect production
Another aspect that draws attention in the cultivation is the method used to keep insects away from the planting area. According to Luciana, plant protection is done with a recipe prepared on the property itself.
The mixture used includes:
- Chili pepper;
- Citronella;
- Vinegar;
- Alcohol.
According to the producer, the combination works as a natural repellent inside the covered greenhouse where part of the food is grown.
In a report to Globo Rural, she explained that this is the strategy adopted to take care of the organic products produced by the family.
Production meets consumption and commercialization
The property’s harvest is not only intended for domestic consumption. Part of the food cultivated by the couple is commercialized, while another portion remains destined for the family’s consumption.
When production exceeds immediate demand, the tomatoes are also used for making homemade pasta.
The giant tomato, therefore, emerged within an already established routine of organic cultivation, becoming a curious example of how a fruit can reach unusual dimensions even without the use of chemical products.
Natural cultivation results in surprise in the garden
The case recorded in Segredo demonstrates that agricultural practices based on organic management can also produce surprising results. In a relatively small area, of just 36 square meters, Luciana and Paulo Ricardo Bavaresco harvested a 978-gram tomato that far exceeded the weight normally observed in the oxheart variety.
Besides the impressive size, the fruit maintained flavor, appearance, and typical characteristics of the species, reinforcing the success of the natural method adopted by the couple in their daily production
