With an Installed Capacity of 260.4 MW, the Wind Farms Acquired by Copel Increase Its Wind Production Capacity by 28%
Copel, Companhia Paranaense de Energia, announced the acquisition, through its subsidiary Copel Geração e Transmissão, of the wind farms of the Santa Rosa & Mundo Novo and Aventura complexes, owned by EDP Renováveis Brasil. The amount invested by the company was R$ 1.8 billion and, with this new acquisition, wind energy now represents 17% of Copel’s portfolio. This was done as part of the company’s strategy to grow in renewable energy and diversify its generation matrix.
The complexes acquired by Copel have a total installed capacity of 260.4 MW when combined. With this transaction, the company’s installed wind production capacity increased by 28%, and wind energy now represents 17% of the company’s generation portfolio. According to executives, this results in a reduction of the company’s exposure to hydrological risk.
Wind Complexes Acquired by Copel Represent Nine Parks Located in Rio Grande do Norte
The company states that Rio Grande do Norte is “considered one of the best regions in the world for wind energy generation.” Copel emphasizes that the complexes include nine parks that are already in operation and are located in the municipalities of Touros and São Tomé, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.

An “invisible” plant can transform rivers meeting the sea into electricity 24 hours a day: French startup uses nanotechnology to extract energy from the salt difference between fresh and saltwater, without sun, wind, dam, or fuel.
It is estimated that about 76.5% of the energy generated in the complexes has already been sold in the regulated market, while 13.7% of the energy has been sold in the free market, leaving only 9.8% of the energy available for new contracts.
The completion of the acquisition of the wind farms by Copel still depends on the approval of CADE (Administrative Council for Economic Defense).
