Deep Restructuring in Airbus Group Is Implemented to Tackle Challenges and Opportunities in the Space Sector

The Airbus Group, Europe’s largest aircraft manufacturer, announced a harsh blow to its Defense and Aerospace division: 2,043 layoffs, which represents about 5% of the total 35,000 employees in this area. While the military aircraft and cybersecurity business is doing well, the space sector faces severe problems.

Cuts Concentrated in the Space Systems Business

More than half of the redundancies (1,128 positions) will fall on the Space Systems business, after heavy losses by the company in this segment, especially in the satellite market. According to the German newspaper Der Spiegel, the cuts will be distributed among Germany (700 positions), the United Kingdom, France, and Spain.

Intense Competition and New Technologies Pressure the Satellite Market

The traditional geostationary satellite market, at high altitudes, has halved in recent years, pressed by increasing competition and new technologies. The SpaceX Group, led by Elon Musk, is now the world’s largest satellite operator, posing challenges to Airbus’s business model.

Space Sector Records Write-Downs in the First Half of the Year

Despite good performance in military aircraft and cybersecurity businesses, Airbus’s space sector had to register several write-downs in the first half of 2023, leading the company to take tough measures to restructure and remain competitive, according to Infomoney.

Airbus Seeks Streamlining to Strengthen Its Market Position

Even though the layoffs are a painful decision, Airbus states that there will be no compulsory dismissals, indicating that it will seek other forms of adjustment, such as reallocating employees. The goal is to streamline the structure of the Defense and Aerospace division to make it more agile and prepared for the sector’s challenges, especially in the space segment.

This restructuring is part of the Airbus Group’s efforts to adapt to an increasingly competitive and technological market. By focusing on its most efficient areas, the company hopes to strengthen itself and maintain its leadership position in the aerospace sector in Europe.
