An explosion on a power-generating vessel off the coast of the Philippines caused the spillage of over 400,000 liters of oil into the sea, resulting in an unprecedented environmental disaster for the country.

The accident did not affect the electricity supply in the city, which has about half a million people, as the locality has other sources of energy, according to the president of the Iloilo City Council, Jerry Trenas.
The coast guard stated that it is investigating and that charges may be brought against the vessel’s owners. The Thai government maintains these heavy oil power-generating barges in some areas not served by traditional electrical grids. This was the first time such an accident occurred in the region, and fortunately, there were no injuries.
