Mining Revolution: The Largest Raw Pink Diamond Was Discovered in the Lunda Norte Region of Angola. Named “Lulo Rose”, It Weighs an Impressive 170 Carats.

An impressive pink diamond was discovered in 2022 by a group of miners in Angola, a country located in Southern Africa. It is estimated that this gemstone, weighing 170 carats, is the largest of its kind found in the last 300 years. Compared to the Daria-i-Noor, the largest pink diamond in the world at 182 carats, this new discovery is only slightly smaller. The Daria-i-Noor is part of the Iranian National Jewels, preserved in the National Jewelry Treasury at the Central Bank of Iran. mining

Named “Lulo Rose”, the diamond received this name in honor of the Lulo mine, located in northeastern Angola, where it was found. The Lucapa Diamond Company, which manages this mine and another in the country, announced the discovery in a statement. Since 2015, the Lulo mining project has discovered 27 diamonds over 100 carats, including the “February 4 Stone,” the largest diamond ever found in Angola, weighing 404 carats, sold for US$16 million in 2016, equivalent to around R$83 million today. mining

According to information from LiveScience, approximately 90 million carats of rough diamonds are extracted annually for jewelry manufacturing, generating global revenue of over US$300 billion (R$15.7 trillion). However, diamond mining is often associated with dangerous conditions, displacement of indigenous peoples, worker exploitation, pollution, and human rights abuses, as reported in 2018 by Human Rights Watch, an international nonprofit organization based in the U.S. mining

Eternal Pink Sold for US$34 Million in Just Two Minutes

In an auction held in June 2023, the pink diamond Eternal Pink was sold for US$34 million in just two minutes. This diamond, described as the “most important pink diamond on the market”, was auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York. mining

The Eternal Pink weighs 10.57 carats and has been described as flawless in terms of clarity. Extracted in 2019 from the Damtshaa mine in Botswana, the diamond was cut into a cushion shape and set in a ring. Besides its high quality, its bubblegum pink color is a highlight. mining

The Science Behind the Vivid Coloration of Pink Diamonds Is Still Not Fully Understood

The science behind the vivid coloration of pink diamonds is still not fully understood, which adds to their appeal. Usually, the presence of trace elements, such as boron, gives color to diamonds, like the blue hue, but pink diamonds do not contain these elements. The best current explanation is that the color results from stress at the atomic level. mining

These incredible gemstones form at extreme depths, around 160 km or more below the Earth’s surface, where carbon deposits are subjected to the intense heat of the planet’s interior. These gemstones can reach the surface during volcanic eruptions, where they may remain for millions of years before being found by miners or carried to waterways by erosion. Nowadays, they are predominantly found through mining activities.

It is rare to find a diamond larger than 10 carats free of minerals and impurities, which increases the value of the piece. The Eternal Pink is considered one of the most important and attractive pink diamonds in the world, although it is not the largest.

Bom dia!
