In The Heart Of The Vast Agricultural Landscapes, Where Water Is As Precious As Gold, An Innovation Is Provoking Intense Reactions. Imagine A Solution That Not Only Promises But Delivers Impressive Results, Revolutionizing The Way Agriculture Deals With Water Scarcity.

It Is This Promise That Is Being Brought By A Technology Developed In Mexico, Capable Of Multiplying Crops And Drastically Reducing The Need For Irrigation.

This Novelty Is Known As “Solid Rain,” A Superabsorbent Polymer Created By Mexican Chemical Engineer Sérgio Jesus Rico Velasco.

This Invention Is Based On Potassium Polyacrylate, A Material Originally Developed By The United States Department Of Agriculture In The 1970s To Manufacture Disposable Diapers.

However, Velasco Saw A Much More Valuable Potential For Agriculture In The Product, Adapting It To Retain Large Amounts Of Water In The Soil And Gradually Release It, Ensuring The Survival Of Crops Even In Periods Of Severe Drought.

How Does ‘Solid Rain’ Work?

The Magic Of “Solid Rain” Happens Through A Powder That Can Absorb One Liter Of Water With Just 10 Grams Of Material.

Once Mixed With The Soil, This Powder Encapsulates The Water And Releases It Gradually, In A Controlled Manner, Directly To The Roots Of The Plants.

The Technology Has Been Tested By The Mexican Government, Which Reported An Increase Of Up To 300% In Agricultural Productivity In Areas Where The Product Was Used.

With This Innovation, The Company Responsible For Commercializing “Solid Rain” Estimates That Irrigation Can Be Reduced By Up To 90%, While Crop Productivity Can Be Increased By Up To 20 Times.

Promise Of Efficiency And Savings

According To Edwin González, Vice President Of The Company That Commercializes The Technology, “Solid Rain” Can Last Between 8 To 10 Years In The Soil, Depending On The Quality Of The Water Used.

This Means That, In Addition To Immediate Water Savings, There Is A Long-Term Benefit As The Material Remains Active For Years.

The Cost, However, Is Still An Open Question, With 50 Kilograms Of The Product Required Per Hectare Of Crop, Representing An Initial Investment Of About US$ 1,500, Or Approximately R$ 3,500 In 2024.

The Controversy Surrounding The Innovation

Despite The Enthusiasm Surrounding “Solid Rain,” Not Everyone Is Convinced Of Its Effectiveness And Environmental Safety.

Professor Linda Chalker-Scott From Washington State University In The United States, Raises Concerns About The Ecological Impact Of The Product.

According To Her, When The Absorbent Powder Begins To Dry, It Can Extract Water From The Soil Itself, Potentially Harming The Environment Instead Of Helping.

Chalker-Scott Argues That Organic Fertilizers, Such As Wood Chips, Can Provide Similar Results At A Much Lower Cost And With Less Environmental Risk.

The Future Of ‘Solid Rain’

Velasco And His Supporters Believe That “Solid Rain” Represents A Crucial Advancement For Agriculture, Especially In Arid Regions Or Areas With Limited Water Resources.

As The Search For Sustainable Solutions In Agriculture Intensifies Worldwide, Products Like This Can Play An Essential Role In Adapting To Climate Change And Ensuring Global Food Security.

However, Critics Are Calling For More Studies And Large-Scale Testing To Confirm The Alleged Benefits And Ensure There Are No Long-Term Negative Impacts.

“Solid Rain” Promises To Be A Revolution For Agriculture, But Like Any Innovation, It Brings Challenges And Debates.

Will This Technology Truly Transform The Way We Grow Our Food, Or Are We Facing Another Solution With Unpredictable Side Effects? Share Your Opinion In The Comments And Join This Discussion That Could Change The Future Of Agriculture.

Há uns 30 anos atrás a Dupont desenvolveu um polímero com as mesmas características e nunca mais se falou no assunto. O que teria acontecido?
