CTG ABINT Will Hold Course on Geomembrane Installation at IMT from August 13 to 16, Focused on Training Installers with Updated Techniques and Sustainable Development.
The Technical Committee on Geosynthetics of the Brazilian Association of Nonwoven and Technical Fabrics Industries (CTG ABINT) will promote the Geothermal Installation Course at the Mauá Institute of Technology. This initiative, scheduled to take place from August 13 to 16, aims to equip professionals with the most advanced techniques, prioritizing sustainable development.
During the event, a group of specialized instructors will provide a comprehensive practical and theoretical learning environment. The main goal of the Geomembrane Placement Training is to ensure quality and efficiency in installations. In addition to theoretical classes, there will be practical sessions for better absorption of the taught techniques. Participate in the Geothermal Installation Course and elevate your skills to the next level.
Geothermal Installation Course
Between August 13 and 16, the Mauá Institute of Technology (IMT), located in São Paulo, will host the ‘Paulo Kenji Açakura’ Geothermal Installation Course. This is the second edition of the course, named in honor of Eng. Paulo Açakura, a pioneer in the installation of geomembranes in Brazil. The initiative will bring together a select group of highly qualified professionals, aiming to train installers using the latest technologies in geomembrane installation while ensuring quality. Participants will have the opportunity to attend theoretical classes, but this year’s focus will be on practical applications, aiming to enhance the professional development of those involved.

According to MSc. Samira Tessarolli Paranhos, engineer at Ober Geossintéticos and future coordinator of CTG ABINT: ‘We have prepared a complete program that covers everything from preparation and installation procedures to geomembrane welding. We will also emphasize construction quality control and verification, fusion welding techniques, and details about HDPE geomembranes, among other aspects.’
Geomembrane Placement Training
For Dr. Fernando Lavoie, current coordinator of CTG ABINT, the second edition of this course is essential for the development of the market for geomembranes and the contribution of this industry to engineering, infrastructure, and construction projects. ‘Sharing knowledge about techniques and innovations in the application of geomembranes and best practices that ensure the quality of using these materials is a commitment we have undertaken. This contributes to the sustainable development of Brazil,’ Lavoie states. One of the central objectives of IMT is to support the development of highly qualified professionals, working to train installers for the challenges of the current market.
The event will begin on August 13 at 9 am, with the opening conducted by representatives from CTG ABINT and the Mauá Institute of Technology. Among the topics to be addressed are the preparation and welding of geomembranes, construction quality verification (CQC/CQA), extrusion welding methods, and the importance of CQC.
Technologies Focused on Geomembrane Installation
Dr. Julio Ferreira will be one of the keynote speakers, discussing methods for preparing and welding geomembranes, organizing inspection teams, and achieving zero damage in the installation of geomembranes covered by soil, solid waste, or liquids. Eng. Thiago Costa, Director of Tecnoplás Engenharia, will talk about normative procedures, pipe interference with the geomembrane, and installation practices, as well as examples of poor and good practices in the welding process. ‘Our goal is to teach not only the installers but also the inspectors and buyers of geomembranes,’ Costa explains. ‘Identifying market adventurers and ensuring the quality of the works is crucial,’ he completes.
Eng. César Botelho will lecture on extrusion welding and the positioning and welding of panels in the field. The practical part of the event will be conducted by Eng. Luduik Rosales, including a fusion welding championship and non-destructive testing.
Development of Qualified Professionals
Additionally, Eng. Indiara Giugni, a geosynthetics consultant, will conduct three lectures: characteristics of HDPE geomembranes, pipe interferences, and PVC geomembranes. She emphasizes the need for installers, welders, and inspectors to understand the properties of different geomembranes to ensure durability and quality. ‘The quality of the material is essential, but it can be compromised by inadequate installation,’ warns Indiara. She will also coordinate the IAGI CWT Certification Exam, exclusive for HDPE geomembrane welders, on August 16.
