Drex promises to change the future of the Brazilian economy, but is total control over money what we want?

Few financial innovations have generated as much debate as Drex, the new digital real that promises to completely change the way we deal with money in Brazil.

Launched amid an era of accelerated digital transformations, Drex emerges at a time of consolidation of financial systems such as Pix and cryptocurrencies, which have already challenged traditional transaction models.

These innovations have sparked intense debates about privacy, government control, and accessibility, raising questions that Drex now amplifies in unprecedented ways.

While many see this initiative as a revolution positive, others warn of the risks of a system that could compromise citizens' privacy and financial autonomy.

What is Drex?

According to Bruno Perini, during his participation in the Irmรฃos Dias podcast, Drex is the digital version of the real, developed by the Central Bank of Brazil.

The goal is to implement a 100% digital currency, gradually replacing paper money.

โ€œIn big cities, we already experience something similar, because the use of physical money is minimal. In smaller places, however, the scenario is still different,โ€ explained Perini.

Digital currency would bring logistical advantages, such as reducing the costs of transporting banknotes and increasing transaction security.

However, the impact of the transition for a country of continental dimensions, where access to the internet and smartphones is still limited, is a cause for concern.

Benefits and Challenges of Drex

Perini highlighted that Drex can simplify transactions and democratize access to the financial system. On the other hand, he also warned about the risks associated with total government control over the currency.

โ€œYou could end up in a dystopian scenario where the government monitors all spending and imposes restrictions based on criteria that are not always fair,โ€ the expert said.

Among the concerns is the possibility of the government programming the currency, establishing expiration dates for the use of the money or limiting the application of resources for specific purposes.

According to Perini, โ€œthis could have a positive side, such as preventing money from social programs from being spent on gambling. But it could also lead to abuses, such as limiting the consumption of certain products.โ€

Comparing with Pix

Drex has been compared to Pix, which revolutionized instant payments in Brazil.

Perini recalled that, before the launch of Pix, many believed that the system would compromise users' financial confidentiality.

However, its adoption was massive and brought undeniable benefits. โ€œEven those who beg for money use Pix nowadays. The impact was incredible,โ€ he highlighted.

Despite this, Drex raises deeper questions, especially about state control and the lack of anonymity in financial transactions.

While Pix is โ€‹โ€‹a transfer system, Drex would represent the country's own currency, expanding the possibilities for government monitoring.

an uncertain future

During the podcast, Perini also highlighted that Brazil is one of the pioneering countries in this type of initiative.

In other places, such as the United States, the implementation of a digital currency faces resistance.

โ€œThere, one of Donald Trumpโ€™s promises was to prevent the advancement of a digital dollar,โ€ the expert noted.

Drex is expected to start operating in 2026, but the speed of the project is surprising. For Perini, the accelerated pace could be worrying.

โ€œWe are leading something that other countries are not in such a hurry to adopt. This should make us reflect,โ€ he concluded.

Drex may bring convenience and modernization, but it also raises a series of ethical and political questions.

How much are we willing to give up our privacy in the name of efficiency? Brazilโ€™s financial future is being shaped, and it is essential that the population participates in this debate.

It is impressive how these Neoliberals fear having their shady businesses controlled and monitored.

If it's going to act as currency, you can't stop what you spend. The mechanism that allows you not to gamble on bets is primary, you just need to transfer your money to another place and then the excuse and the obstacle are gone.

This is linked to Brazil's RF, but there will be a lot of tax evaders getting screwed, and I think that's not enough!! May DREX work well just like Pix does. If you don't do anything wrong, there's no reason to be afraid.

Here in the region, there are many companies with abusive overtime practices. They pay in cash, outside of the paycheck. So we are not entitled to the percentage of the thirteenth salary, vacations and the severance pay. With the DREX, this would end. I am only concerned about the fact that many people still do not have access to the internet. I think that is what needs to be focused on. At the very least, an agreement should be made with the cell phone operators so that banking applications can access the network regardless of whether the user has access or not.

It's not a question of party or whether you do something wrong. The question is CONTROL. You give up your privacy to a State, which tomorrow could be in the hands of a tyrant or a public official who wants to harm you. This purely digital currency must be combated. It is already banned in the US and other countries are already mobilizing in this regard.

Let DREX come and let tax evaders cry, remembering that DREX will be 100% tracked from the source, so when it leaves the bank and passes from account to account it will generate a protocol like the bit coim, so if you receive the family allowance to buy food, you will not be able to spend it on bets if you receive the gas voucher, you will only be able to buy gas after it has been programmed for that, and it will also serve as a contract, if you buy a car and use DREX, informing that it is a purchase of a vehicle, it will be listed as a temporary protocol, now the government's tax splitters, swindlers and other unscrupulous people will be tracked at the source, if you receive a bribe from a politician, the source will be identified. I want to see the corrupt caught. LOL

It seems like drug money will be tracked, but it really won't be, lol. It's the only money the government won't have access to. It will only have access if they go from community to community to find out how much they collect in drugs, and that will never happen.
